Don't Move Controls So Fast
« on: November 09, 2001, 03:40:00 PM »
I'm pretty mad.  I'm really gettins sick of this "Don't move your controls so rapidly" message and then lock me in whatever flight attitude I was last in for what seems 3 hours.  Even if I do get an occasional spike, the code should be written to know the difference between stirring and a spike.  A stir should be a couple moves in all axese (sp?) before it locks you.  Also, why is it such an excessive amount of time?

Twice today, in my F6F, I roll inverted and pull back to perform a split S.  The first time I encounter the message today, I lock up after pulling through and slightly above horizon while the P47 I was fighting flies off to get about 5,000 yards off.  The 2nd time, I do the same thing to dive down on a P51...roll inverted and pull through and lock up pointed nose down to splash into the water.  At least put me into a stall or something so I can do something about it and not lock me up!

I'm sorry I got mad in the forum, but I'm sincere in that I'm not doing anything near to stirring and the last thing I want to do in an F6F or F4U is yank the joystick all around.  I really think the detection function should be able to differentiate between a spike or two and a full on series of fast control movements.  What a pisser!

I must be extremely lucky. Or its just that my nature has been steady stick inputs I never yank the stick hard always a controlled easy input to reduce scrubbing E  :) I will have to see if I can make it do it.

Go to Setup>joystick and increase a bit the "damping" bar. It's purpose is to smooth the joystick input so spikes are not "transmitted" to the plane. Keep "damping" as low as possible. As you will notice inreasing its value has a drawback in delay on plane responses.

Never had a problem with it. Never consciously had to watch my stick movements to avoid it. Flying with X-36 here.

I do use a little damping anyway to help the steadiness of my aim, but like Sombra says toy around with the damping and you should be able to sort it out.

Thanks, all.  Sorry, but you know how frustrating and embarassing it is to attack someone then get stuck flying straight and level in front of them or straight into the water?

I'll play with my dampening.  The msgs have gotten worse all of a sudden with no adjustments to my joystick but I'll adjust more.  But just give me an idea, how high is your dampening slider?  25%?  10%?

Try 20% or so for now. See if that helps.

I had a set of rudder pedals that spiked really, really bad. Didn't realize it till I started watching the little graphs in the stick setup window.

I had to get new pedals but damping did help until I got that done.

I'd suggest upping your damping until the lines in the window stay pretty smooth.

Good luck!

Sounds like your pots are either going or becoming dirty.
A good way to check is to go to the Windows Controller setup and move the controls arounds. Are the inputs in the control panel moving smoothly or are they jittery?
If they're jittery, you don't necesarrily have to buy a new stick/rudder pedals. You can often extend their lifetime by cleaning the pots. This is done by dismantling them, so you got access to the pots and then spray some contact cleaner into them and work them around. You *can* use stuff like WD40, but because of the greasy nature, it will also cause them to pick up dirt quicker. With my old analog Saitek X36 (Which had notorious bad pots) I had to do this every 2-3 months, but the difference is huge. It will also dramasticly increase your gunnery.

Periodically I get the stick stirring message when I'm barely touching the stick.  Which means a trip back first to the Windows setup to recalibrate the joystick, then to the Aces High setup to recalibrate it there too.

So far that has always solved my problem.  Oh, and the last time the AH setup somehow had my stick as (shudder) force feedback, which is it NOT, which I corrected in setup, and now it works great again.

Halo,

I'll give a look.  I did notive after the update and patch my stick calibration in AH was way off.  I never thought to check it in Windows (I figure they are using the same thing) because I quickly fixed it in-flight but I will anyhow.  Thank you.
