DC3/C47.  I don't know that any other bird has had such a worldwide impact and is still working after 70 years

Curtiss or Bleriot...they had it going after the Wright Brothers
Dc-3, a surprizingly early breakthrough in commercial aviation as well as military workhorse.
Spitfire/109, - the fighters of 1939 with nothing challenging them.
The F-15 Eagle, - No challenge in combat history.
The 747, - unbeatable workhorse.

5 slots is too little....

It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

Agreed Mr. Gup.  The C47 is still hauling cargo.  I spoke w/ a guy who flew one in South America w/o A/C.

Gh0stFT,

I noticed your "Location".  Do you live near/on the Bodensee?

I went there in August.

Hi RATTFINK,
you where on Holidays here ??

I live aprox 44miles west from Bodensee (Lake Constance), exact on the edge between Switzerland & Germany
on the german side, Zurich on the swiss side is aprox 18miles south from here. Did you visit Friedrichshafen at Bodensee?
you know where the Zeppelins where build, and since you visited in August did you catch the "Seenachtfest" on Bodensee?
you know the Lake festival with big fireworks, a really good show.

Btw. a very good point here if you are into Paragliding, 1 hour driving to the East and you are at the Austria alps, to the South
are the Switzerland alps and to the West are the French alps :)

1 P-51
2 B-52
3 SR-71
4 C-47
5 Fokker D-VII

The Me-262 was not effective in war with all the problems it had. Instead of the Camel you should mention the SE5a but even it doesnt match the D-VII. The SR-71 was never touched and thats all you need to say. Without the C-47 China and Berlin (post-war) would have been lost to the allies. The Mig-21 is still seen today which says a lot about its versatility but it still hasnt accomplished much for all its history. F-14 and F-16 share a lot of the same history... under their watch Americans were safe. P-38 was good but not great.
If you like the Sick Puppy Custom Sound Pack the please consider contributing for future updates by sending a months dues to Hitech Creations for account "Chalenge." Every little bit helps.

The Curtiss Pusher (ailerons, a tail and conventional controls)

The Eindecker (point the plane, pull the trigger)

The B-17 (mfg, strategy, precision high alt bombing)

The Constellation (long range international over water passenger service)

The VF-22 Osprey (the marriage of the helicopter and the Fixed wing)

Its just V-22 Osprey, not VF, but otherwise interesting list.  :aok
Treize (pronounced 'trays')- because 'Treisprezece' is too long and even harder to pronounce.

Maybe a shared slot for Mig an F86?
The real reason the F-86 did so well and shot down so many migs, is only because of Pilot training. If they had equivelent training for both sides, it would have been much different.
No one knows what the future may bring.

LOL!

if a pig had wings it would still be a pig.

and there would still be a debate about where in the list it should be.

From the rules: "Posting topics or threads which are based on ..., ..., or ... is expressly forbidden."
Nevertheless:
1) IL-2 ( it's who won WW2)
2) Spitfire (it's who put the first stone of the final of WW2)
3) Li-2 (you call them DC-3) (It's where we discussed who won WW2)
4) B-25 Mitchel (Salute! It's those who died to make it possible to discuss who win WW2)
5) Bf 109 (it's who made it possible to start this dispute in 1939)

(quote)

1. Boeing B-52   This plane will see at least 80 years of service before it's gone completely. By FAR the best combat aircraft ever built.

2. Boeing 707   This plane led the way for comercial jet aviation, not to mention the various military versions that are still in service, AWACS, JSTARS, KC-135. This plane will also see at least 80 years of service if not more.

3. Boeing 747   The Grand Daddy of the super jumbos. Over 40 years in service and this airframe is STILL in production.

4. Douglas DC-3   Rock solid design that has withstood war and peace time missions. After over 70 years of flying, they are still out there doing what they were designed to do.

5. Lockheed SR-71   This plane set so many records it's not even funny. On it's last official flight it set a new world speed record. The technological achievments alone brought about by this plane earn it a place in the top 5 greatest.

Gotta agree with Hornet33.  Few others can approach the contributions of these five workhorses.
