F4U should be on that list. Especially the -4, which is arguably the best American fighter of WWII.

I seriously could not name 5 without breaking it down into eras. WW1, WW2, Korean, and such....

F-15 pwns the worlds best and we are replacing it with the F22, US planes dominate the skies for atleast the next 20 years. This is why my top 5 are all American

I think I got the rules right :

1- an american plane
2- another american plane
3- I'm thinking of an american plane
5- yet another american plane

and yes I don't know how to count.

I agree with you 100%.  It's really a shame that most of the membership doesn't actually read about the history of flight. But, let's wave the flag all we can.   :rolleyes:

1. The Wright Flyer. Started it all.

2. Me-262 For obvious reasons.

3. P-51D  Marriage of Laminar flow and mission requirements.  Perfect story of time and place.

4. Sopwith Camel  Highest scoring aircraft in the first world war.

5. Junkers J.L.6      First all metal monoplane.

3. Focke-Wulf Fw 190 (Würger :)
