Rise of Nations and it's expansion thrones and patriots, has an era for that type of warfare. In it you can go from the ancient age to the near future. Empires Dawn of the modern world is simply a pathetic rip off of Rise of nations
Rise of nations lol, I get caught up into trying to build an empire. Maybe I should stick to the game Civilization.

Wait a bit for this one, the rest of the series is great- I have two of the titles (Rome and Medieval) and attendant expansions from it.

http://www.totalwar.com/

They lost me with the buggy POS that was Medieval 2.  I definately will not be purchasing their new title.  Hell, I am just now considering the Kingdoms expansion pack because it looks as if modders have finally fixed all the issues with it.

Thats "Histwar: Les Grognards". The one I said I have been waiting for.

Problem is. Its been "In delevopment" for like 4 years now LOL.

based on the films and screenshots they keep putting up for it.
Im starting to get convinced that they are having so much fun playing it by themselves. they dont wanna share LOL

Good thing is they aren't rushing it through and they keep giving out updates on it, so I figure it will be a good game when it does come out.

I have an itch
buy I want something that will allow different formations.wheel left/right etc and will actually recognize the significance of being flanked.

too may remind me of Warcraft LOL

The best I ever played was TalonSoft's  "Battleground 3: Waterloo":

An old one but good one, if you can find it -- Age of Rifles.

Also, I remember that Sid Meier came out with a few in that general era, but think they were Civil War more than napoleonic.

Lastly -- haven't played any of their Napoleonic games, but I've had nothing but good experiences with products by Matrix Games. http://www.matrixgames.com/. They tend toward the grognard side, but they have some nice intermediate complexity games too. Not sure if they carry any of the "beer and pretzels" type wargames....

But can't tell you how many hours I've spent on, for example, "Uncommon Valor". Definitely worth checking out if you're any kind of wargamer. (Personally, I go back to Panzer Blitz, Third Reich, Tobruk, and the golden age of Avalon Hill boxed games...)

I never had a problem with Medieval II since the day I bought it, and I don't know anyone else who has either. I have several friends and coworkers who play it, and we have all loved it since the day it came out. You're the first person I've herad mention it being "buggy".

Just little things really, such as

- melee units with two handed swords wouldn't swing them in combat, they'd just stand there (that was fixed, I believe)

- units stop charging the instant one person is in combat.  The rest will just stop where they are and then saunter on in at their leisure.  This one really killed cavalry, and never was fixed by the company (looks like it may have finally been fixed by a modder though)

- when the Kingdoms expansion came out there were numerous HUGE bugs in the campaigns.  I don't feel like going into all of them, but the Danish / Eastern European one was bugged to hell and gone, and the American and English campaigns also had some (but not gamekilling ones like the Danish one)

I have Age of Rifles I play using Dosbox. Still a fun game

Havent been able to find any of the Sid Meir games

I go back to the Avalon hill style games as well. "Blitzkreig", "Panzer Leader" And "Kreigspeil"
I WISH they came out with Avalon Hill Version of BlitzKreig for the PC.
I used to love that game

i'm a massive fan of the total war series but i was dissapointed with med 2 too.  I shall wait for reviews from magazines and gamers to decide whether i purchase empire or not.

Personally I loved that game, and still play it from time to time.  The only bug that REALLY bothered me was the charging one you mentioned, which slowed down an attack in a hurry.  If I recall though, this happened all the way back to classic Shogun: Total War.  Not sure, I havent played that one in years.

Despite the rave reviews, the total war game that I really could never get into was Rome: TW.

I cannot wait for the new one though :)

Rise of nations covers the era, it's much like Age of Empires really.
Some of those look great!
Since we are at this...Napoleon era Naval sim???????
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

Despite the rave reviews, the total war game that I really could never get into was Rome: TW.

Yeah, I can't really get into Rome either, and the Barrbarian expansion is even worse- no matter what faction I start as, and no matter if I don't do any recruiting or building, I'm always broke and full of revolts within ten turns. If I build to keep the poeple happy, theres no money to build, if I raise a small army to fight rebels, it drains my resources to nothing, and if I do nothing I lose half my provinces in 5 turns. No matter what faction, including small ones like the Saxons and Goths. Gets old fast.

I forgot about that Cavalry problem, mainly because I found out how to work around it within the first battle I fought- don't set them to charge a unit, set them to charge a point on the map. That way you A) Charge through them and not at them, getting much more impetus for the attack, and B) if the unit you're targeting moves or changes its formation, the chraging Cavalry doesn't stop to reassess the situation. They see the enemy as an obstacle, not the target.

Works great with Ritterbruder. The enemy usually flees as soon as they see them coming, then you can run them down or herd them toward your Infantry.
