Icons off under 1000 yds, but make it an adjustable range please
« on: December 30, 2008, 04:04:16 PM »
I'm requesting a new variable range Arena Setting to remove Icons when within a reasonable identification range. Beyond that range setting, the current arena dot command would take precedent.

On my FE, 800 yds looks like the maximum for aircraft identification without an icon, but give it a range from 0 = icons remain on like we have now, to icons blink off up to 1000 yds away, this builds in some flexibility for the future.

Make it adjustable so the icons can stay on until much closer if my event has heavy clouds and fog, or icons can go off at the max of 800 to 1000 yds if fog-visibility etc is clear.

Thank you
Easy in-game again.

I'm not in favor of any kind of system that doesn't have icons, it favors those with better computers and higher resolutions. What kind of system do you have that allows ID at 800? My desktop can probably handle it, but my laptop specs are more in line with many that fly AH today and it would never be able to tell at that range.

That said, how ya been Easyscor?  :)

Hey there Del

My system is a P4,... 2.6 iirc, with an ATI 9800 Pro-128 MB, that's an AGP card, running at 1024 texture size with ~30 to 60 fps. I'm quite sure it would work just as well on my machine using 512 or even 256 texture sizes, but I deliberately bog my machine down for my terrain work.

Go off line and check how the drones look at 800 yards Del. The reason I want an adjustable setting is to allow us to adjust it based on feed back from our players.

No problem.

Just remove the distance counters, and maintain only the Country, Plane type, and  "+ / -" closure indicators under 1.0.

It's what I've been advocating for a long, long time.

Here's the rationale I've come up with quite some time ago, in a similar thread. The validity of arguments concerning dispersion-related factors due to difference in individual gun ballistics, have been disputed by HT himself, but the basic line of reasoning regarding icons, flight information, and how it effects gunnery, still stands, IMO.

Personally, I would like to see the arena options to include a better set of options for CM's

For example, I would also love to see the option of letting the CM's select a dot color so when the bogey is still some dots they are one color for friendly and another for enemy. It would also be nice if they could select more variables as to when different icons (range/type) would show up.

In my ideal world there would be no ranges.  Rather, enemy "dots" would be grey and friendly ones green.  Once within 1.5 k maybe type would show up but not range.  This would add a lot to ACM and realism while giving some grace to reality.  You could tell if they are bad or nice just the same and ID type at about the same range but SA would be beyond cartoon mode and camouflage pattern selection would actually make some difference.

Kweesa, that was a great read.
After nearly a year of AH without enemy icons, I can say that without enemy icons, anything 600 yards away or further is out of range. Got to get in close and blast away, using the gun-sight.  People dont NEED a red indicator or range, they just THINK they do.

1001ft to 6 = a red range indicator and a +/- and noting more.

0-1000ft = a red range indicator, the red +/-, and the plane type only,  i.e. 109, 190, P47, Spitfire, etc (and not the model type).

No human eye can see 6 miles out and say "HEY, that is a Ki61"!  Maybe they can tell it is a bomber and not a fighter, but not which model.

Why is HTC so relucant to try this for a month???

FYI, in the Main Arenas max icon range is at 6000 yards. That's only about 3.5 miles. :D
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.
