Duck Hunters of AH

Being that is is/has been that time of year, I thought I would make a thread specifically for the duck hunters that read this board.  Feel free to share any pictures or stories about duck hunting.


This was today (Jan 1, 2009 [first duck hunt of the year WOOT!])
 A buddy and I went duck hunting at about 12:30 p.m. today.  By 1:07 we were back at our trucks with each of our limits consisting of:  7 drake mallards, 1 hen mallard, 1 drake widgeon, 1 femal shoveler, and 2 bull sprig pintails.  As you can see in the picture, the pintail on the left is banded.  What a hunt to start out the year!



NOTE:  yes...the head of one greenhead is kind of....torn

I've gotten about 40 ducks throughout the time the season's been open. Also hunt for Geese, Deer and Turkey so it detracts from my duck hunting time.

Once a duck tried to HO my dad, and...well...it's like HO'ing a 190A8 in a B5N, guaranteed loss EVERY time.

p.s  what is good marinade for duck..?

Not being a hunter, just wondering the significance of the banded one.  Do the track migration patterns that way? 

When you get a band you call 1-800-327-BAND and give them the numbers.  They then send you a certificate telling how old the duck was and when and where it was hatched.  So basically yes it is for tracking their migration patterns

Actually, yes, you can.  There are bands on geese (atually collars on their necks) where each color is worth a set amount of cash.  On ducks (usually mallards only) there are ducks "double-banded" (meaning a band on each leg).  One band is a cash reward and the other is like the one on my pintail in the picture

p.s  what is good marinade for duck..?

Personal preference.  We usually marinade them in steak marinades (our favorite being Dales)

So far, as of today, we are at 857 ducks killed.  635 of which have meen mallards.

What do you do with all those ducks?  Eat them?  Sell them to restaurants or markets?  Give them to friends or charity food places?

We almost do all of the above.  We don't sell them, though.  but duck makes some great food, even makes great jerky.  We give them to friends because...they like them too    And yes, along with extra deer meat, we give them to the local charity food drive.

Yeah duck is GOOD EATIN! Along with goose! But with goose, you have to marinate it just right.

I have only been duck shooting a few times and had a blast doing it each time. It is some great fun and especially when you get done that fast and get back to clean and cook/aka drink beer while waiting on the birds to finish cooking.

lol, howd the head get torn? Was the dog alittle to enthusiastic? Best duck story ever, for me, atleast was when I was about 12. I had just gotten my 12 gauge. There was a nice sized flock that decided to fly over just as we were heading back to the truck. I tracked the lead bird, but when I fired the recoil knocked me on my back. Got the duck though, but it landed it a tree.
