ping
« on: January 03, 2009, 02:09:38 PM »
Hello felloiw Ahers, I have been having tons of problems with a new computer i bought.  the problem is massive warping, to the point that even GVs are affected.  I have been have been working with skuzzy on the problem but I am about to give up hope.   BTW, I am NOT a computer guy at all.

At skuzzys suggestion I ran a ping of 206.16.60.38, and these are the results that I got, bytes 32, time 16, and TTL of 244.  Are these good readings or we Ihave a problem with the connectivity ?? thanks.

It would be much more helpful if we could see some DxDiag and Ping Plotter results.

To get your DxDiag results, go to Start>Run type in: dxdiag  then press OK. Now wait for the application to finish loading (There's typically a loading bar on the bottom left of the DxDiag application) then press the, "Save all Information..." button. Now save the file some place where you can find it easily, such as your desktop. After saving the file go to the location of the file and open it. Now highlight the first 1/3 of the file from the top, copy it, and paste it in a reply here. That's your DxDiag.

Now to get a Ping Plotter output you will firstly have to download Ping Plotter here:
http://www.pingplotter.com/download.html

After the installation of Ping Plotter, open it. Type in the IP Address you listed above (206.16.60.38) into the, "Address to Trace" slot. Then press the Enter key on your keyboard. Allow the trace to run about 5 minutes, then press the STOP button. Now go to Edit>Copy as Text. Now in a reply here, paste the text Ping Plotter just copied for you. These are your Ping Plotter results.

Your main problem may be having too many background processes/services running. Are you running XP or Vista? If you are running XP you can be as low as appr. 20 processes running. I think Vista will be in mid 20's. You can check this by CTL/ALT/DEL. This is your task manager and at the bottom of the window it will show how many processes are running in your background. Although you may not see them, many will run without the user knowing. Please post a screen shot of your task manager and if you cannot simply reply to this post to let me know.

The second is your ISP(Internet Service Providor). According to Skuzzy, many ISP'S have switched the level 3. Level 3 as I understand, is like an intersection to two cross streets with no stop lights. The more traffic the increased jam at the intersection and slower ping times. Your connection goes thru many levels(hops) from destination trip to return trip. Using Ping Plotter will log those "TRIP" times in milliseconds. Skuzzy advised me to run it with Hi Tecs IP addy at a busy time and at least 15 minutes to check the hops. Ping Plotter will give current reading/average reading/ high reading. You can then copy the entire report onto this post and Skuzzy will interpret the results.

If indeed you have too many processes let me know and there is many guides available to manually disable services and or processess you will never use. Also guys use ENDITALL2, FSAUTOSTART AND ALTRICITY(Think this is name). These free software services will auto disable most services/processes in your background. They do not disable any processes your computer absolutely needs to run. For instance, you may have 60 processes running and all that is required is appr 20, your CPU is ummmmm. kinda jammed.

Good Luck,

Death

Already did this with skuzzy, butit cant hurt, I am running vista, and I run a program called "enditall" which kills just about everything running in the background.  I have also done all of the suggested steps when running vista.

hop number 4 is the one thats killing you. Its level3, which means there isn't much you can do. Level3 gets clogged up due to people over selling the bandwidth.

level 3 was explained to me like it is a busy intersection with no traffic signals. When the intersection gets busy it becomes like a traffic jam I guess.

You can't demand anything. You can only ask to submit a complaint about the hop at Level-3. Submit the PingPlotter results to them and they will know which hop is causing the trouble. I doubt they're going to do anything about it, though.

It depends on your region and who is around. Some companies are better than others, and sometimes you're stuck with a bad one which is the only good one around.
