How is it the F4U can fly with 1/2 a wing missing and still dive and turn well enough to evade being killed?

The P47 is barely controllable under the same condition, the 109 is uncontrollable as are many other planes. This kind of stuff *really* hacks me off,ANY plane that loses 1/2 a wing should be dead meat, and yes I`ve read the storys about planes coming home with trees/poles stuck in the wings-but this is a game...not... real life, please fix this HTC.

To add insult to injury, some planes cannot even fly at all with a wingtip missing.

Oh, and the F4U with both wingtips off is FAST. In this film, I've jst shot off both wingtip off an F4U - he dives, accelerates away and returns to base succesfully.

I'm in a g10, on the deck  .

Santa is that film from that day over near A7?  Thought you said you were in a G2, which is why you couldna catch me.

The way I understood the missing wingtip is that's how the game engine shows that alot of damage has been done to the structure and it no longer funtions as well as it should.  Fly CFS2 and when your wingtips get shot up you have neat damage showing on them, and the kites roll into the damaged wing.  With enough speed you can counter the effects somewhat, and still run away.

Nah - his conv settings are so screwed up that when he aims at a pilot he hits wingtips .

I highly suggest you take a F4U up in TA, have someone you know go with you, aim for your wing-tips, shoot them off, (just one) and then do your regular ACM.  I, for one, cannot. the only thing I can do is dive  for  home, and nurse that puppy all the way.

Sure, I can turn it once, maybe even get away with turning it twice, but once that energy bleeds to under 150 kts., then you get a wing stall effect thats almost impossible to pull out of if you have no alt.

The F4U was a tough bird, known for taking alot of damage, you see, the 109 was  not known for that.

Excellent point Rip and I completely agree.  If you got shot down by a F4U which is missing one or two wings, I can only think one of two things happened:

1.  Net problems between you and the target are not causing you enemy to get some of the damage packets that you supposedly caused.  Its kinda like a synchronization thing.  As an example last nite, SkViper and some others saw a Nit Niki (Maki) lose wings, regain them, burst into flames and then continue on.

2.  You went for a head on gamble and lost.  I agree with Rip that the F4U (and the 51 for that matter) are utterly useless as weapons once a wing is gone.  I find myself having to use loads of opposite aileron to counter the planes  willingness to roll in the direction of the missing wing and elevator control is MARKEDLY reduced.  Sure I can run in one of those planes....but im not gonna shoot anyone down unless they make a mistake.

Hi

Guys when I was dweebing in a chog couple tours ago I had many multiple kill sorties up to 5 or 6 kills, on a number of these flights I got 4 or 5 kills AFTER my wing was shot off. I did not see a real loss in speed, handling wasnt great but I was fully able to turn in all directions, climb, dive with controll, and of course kill several enemy aircraft. Something isnt right with that, yes corsirs were tough, but with that amount of wing area missing it shouldny be abnle to climb, with that much wing area missind the pilot would have to keep all his attention on leveling the plane due to difference in lift, all the extra drag from shot-off wing disrupting normal airflow would kill speed. Something just isnt right about this. Tough planes in RL were the ones that could take damage and LIMP home not loose giant wing-sections and continue fighting.

thanks GRUNHERZ

grun... u are a lot better at flying with a wingtip gone than either rip or I.   I have to hold allmost full aileron to stay level.  the plane will not fly below about 200 mph to land without rolling uncontrolably to one side.

I don't know how much wing is gone when the "tip" is gone but the lower the wingloading the more chance a plane has of flying.   P47's and 109's have very high wing loading.  Hogs and zekes do not.   I have read accounts where the wing of an F4U had a 6' hole in it (a man could fit through sideways) and the pilot had no trouble flying hundreds of miles home and landing.   A 6' hole in a 109 wing would be damn near the whole wing.
