Awesome?  The pilot was being a flaming jerk to his passenger.  Probably a rental that he didn't bother to clean either.

It never ceases to amaze me what some of these GA pilots will do with their planes, especially when they video it and post it on youtube.

Sometimes I wonder if it was just a lack of training from the beginning or if these guys simply forgot or ignore what they learned.

What I'm talking about is the low flying in the RV8 video, the part over the water. This is not the only example, its very easy to find many videos of this type of low flying posted all over youtube. I'm not going to even say anything about the boat or the bridge, neither of which did he have 500 foot separation from, which is simply breaking FAA rules. What I'm talking about though is the inherit danger of flying single engine airplanes with no possible chance of an emergency landing. If he had an engine out at any time over the water there would have simply been no way to save his plane. He'd either dump it in the water where it would break up on contact, or he'd be on the beach crashing into trees. Both situations he's destroyed his plane and possibly killed himself, all from what resulted in an engine out, the most common and trained for emergency procedure in flight training.

Compound this by the fact that this is an experimental and he's probably doing a lot of the engine maintenance himself, it just seems stupid to fly like this.

An open question to people who fly like this, why? What makes you think you are totally immune to engine outs or other emergencies every other pilot is training for? What is going through your head when you are in a situation where there would be no possible chance of an emergency engine out landing ending well?

I'm not going to even comment on the back seat Cessna video, other than to say the pilot is a jerk and if I was a passenger I'd have some words with him on the tarmac.

What I'm talking about though is the inherit danger of flying single engine airplanes with no possible chance of an emergency landing.

There is a lot of routine flying where the loss of your engine will put you in dire straights such as night, flight over vast areas of forest/jungle, flight over congested areas (cities).  The chance of a successful emergency landing is slim in those instances also...you not going to fly then?

What makes you think the plane would breakup?  GA aircraft have a pretty good ditching history.

I've had 7 engine failures in my flying career, all the engines were maintained by A&Ps.  In a couple of those cases I could have done a better job myself with the maintenance.

I'm guessing you aren't a pilot.

From a person with 7 engine failures I'm surprised at your attitude. I agree there are some unavoidable instances where an engine out would be very bad, like right after take off at most airports. The point is though, as a pilot you try to minimize the time spent in these situations. At night you try to fly from one lit area to another, staying in gliding distance of at least something to descend to. Over cities there are golf courses, parks, even roads to land on. Over the forest your looking for meadows or clearings.

A GA plane might survive a water landing but its still going to cause a lot of damage and put the pilot in a dangerous situation. And if you survive good luck with the FAA.

I have done some low flying before, and with enough speed you can gain altitude and glide a good distance after an engine out. Its hard to tell from that video but he could be perfectly safe, my comments are just about that type of flying in general.

Care to share the circumstances of your 7 engine failures?
