Aces High for Kids

My two sons are facinated with Aces High. It's the game "Dad" plays. They are 7 and 10.

Both can play the game in offline. But they are more interested in quick action..."Dad how can I shoot rockets...drop bombs...how can I shoot something with that tank"...etc

I recently went to the local game store. We looked for PS2 airplane games. I found a couple jet games. But they didnt really hold any interest to the boys...i gues too complicated.

I asked about "prop plane" games. I dont rem the name but there was one they didnt have..sold out.

I was looking for a more simplified airplane game. One where they can choose planes and fly around shooting stuff for points and shoot AI drones...etc.... but it doesnt exist.

I started thinking...what a great kid game...a flight sim that is easy to fly and has cools stuff...like flying through obstacles....shooting targets...etc...earn points and so on....to get better planes. Just like the car racing games out.

If HiTech is listening...this might be something to think about....

I can relate in that I have a 7 year-old son very interested in playing. He has the basic flight dynamics down pretty well. For now, he plays strictly offline. I cannot let him fly online simply because he has a tendency to carry fowl-mouthiness from the game to the school bus.

do you have a wii? There are always better/more fun games for kids on the wii, i have a couple of good WWII games on mine.

Maybe have someone make an offline mission for the kids? Keep it kind of simple, all you have to do is fly through an X amount of rings, then shoot down 1 plane. (remember to turn on the stall limiter for the kids!)

If you are looking for older style prop driven fun on the PS2 there are several options. Its actually been a while since i had a ps2 but did a search on gamespot.com and IGN.com and came up with the following games.

Heroes of the Pacific
WWII: Battle Over the Pacific
Secret Weapons Over Normandy
Pacific Warriors II: Dogfight
Victory Wings: Zero Pilot Series
Zero Pilot: Kosora no Kiseki

The last two I couldn't find a good description on just that they existed. As 1pLUs44 mentioned Offline Missions are also a good option many of them will move you closer to the action after takeoff. I know there is a scoring system in the Offline Missions but i do not know if any of the current missions out there use this or not.

my 10 year old plays AH.  He gose by the name yoshi8.  He likes it but relly dont understand the whole battle.   In time, he will learned and replace shawk or who ever is dam good.

Oh Yea this is a fun game with a great story line. But its jets.

"Battle stations: Midway" would be a good one. It has other aspects besides aircraft as well, pt boats, gunners, ect...you can probably find that used at Gamestop for under $20 I'd imagine.

I know this is a way diffrent thing and you may not even liked it. If they want to fly somthing with a prop, and its WW2, try R/C. R/C is a lot of father/son type of thing, and its a lot of fun. The 10 year is at perfect age because thats when I started. It does cost some money and a lot of time, but if you have it, like in the situation that I'm in, you can have a lot of fun with it. I still never regret the decision to start flying R/C, it's somthing that almost anyone can learn.

I'll find the website were you can get a P-51 trainer that Horizon Hobby has to offer. If I'm not mistaken, the range is from 150-200$ tops ready to fly.
If you have the time and money, do it, you can even learn if you wanted to.

Straying from topic a bit, but I just recently dug out the ol' Tiger Trainer (beater) from my shop after many years of it gathering dust. Stuck a basic Futaba radio in it and a Thundertiger .40. I'll be teaching my 7 and 9yr. old sons soon. I'm definitely not ready for scale WW2 aircraft yet.

If you have a spare PC set him up on a trial, take up a b17 at 5 k over an enemy field and let him gun, my 12 year old used to love the quick action aspect.

Agent I would encourage them to play AH with you if at all possible. Forget those other games.

Sondog started off in my lap at the age of 3. By the time he was 8 or so he was shooting up drones. When he was 10 he said he asked what it would take to get an account and fly online with big boys. I told him and within a short period of time he satisfied my requirements. Sooner than I expected from the bugger. He does not fly so much any more (he is into the first person shooters), but when he was I had some great times flying with my son. Lots of wonderful memories. No doubt you would too.

Also try out some of the missions that players have made. That is a great way for your boys to pick up some practice.
