VVS Spitfire Mk IX

Found this unusual VVS Spitfire Mk IX scheme in a book. Most Soviet Spits were left in their RAF colours, just with stars and unit markings painted over the top. This one though has been completely repainted in VVS dark green and light blue.

I think it's a late Mk IXc, the one I'm planning is very similar.

Just realised that my VVS Spitfire scheme is a post war aircraft circa 1948. That is no good for AH so I think I will modify the skin into the aircraft shown on the profile Twinboom posted. That one is captioned as being from spring 1945 and is a more interesting scheme anyway. I only went for the first one as I had a good photo of it.

Interesting that the arrow in the photograph goes all the way to the front of the ac. It is also clearly a two colored arrow. Different squadron within the group?

Then someone *cough USRANGER cough* can revive a certain old Winter War map (or an evolution thereof) and have an all-out Luftwaffe vs VVS war!

I just noticed something. That Spitfire in the back of the Osprey book is a Mk.VIII. The Soviet Union took no deliveries of Mk.VIII Spitfires the last I checked.

A Spit XVI is only a Spit IX with a Packard built Merlin. The AH Spit IX is a 1942 aircraft with C type wing and standard wingtips. The AH Spit XVI is a late 44 version with the E wing, clipped wingtips and extended fin and rudder. The convention in skinning terms is to skin any Spit IX that has an E wing (cannons outboard of the 0.5in guns) on the Mk XVI skin as this is closer in shape and performance to the real aircraft.

I'm a bit dubious about the accuracy of the Osprey book now. The aircraft Twinboom posted is described as a Mk IXE but the cannon layout shown on the profile is a Mk IXC. I suspect its more likely to be an E and that the artist screwed up. Without a photo its hard to tell.

The profile of my original Spit IX skin is actually shown twice inside the Osprey book with different descriptions, one says 1944 the other 1948. I think I'll shelve this skin until I get better info on it.
