Sorry if I was a tad harsh but it is really sad seeing players automatically resort to a HO merge because they don't know how to properly merge. 

Here is a link to Rocketman's excellent write up on merge tactics that should be required reading for all players and will give you more options at your disposal.  I highly recommend you read it and then spend sometime practicing what you read.

If asked I'll gladly be someones sparring partner if they want to practice merges or whatever.
