New system ordered
« on: January 15, 2009, 09:56:20 PM »
I am an old AW player from a long time ago. I have always missed my days in the virtual sky and needed an excuse to get a new system anyway. My old desktop had made way long ago for a work laptop and I was in dire need of a combat fix these days. Here are my applicable specs:

    Upgrades And Options:
     l Intel® Core™ i7 965 EE 3.2GHz 8MB Shared L3 Cache 1x6.4GT/s QPI Quad-Core VT EM64T (req. MoBo & DDR3 Upg.)
     l 12228MB Patriot™ DDR3 @1333MHz 6x2048 Dual Rank Interleave w/Heat Spread (Core i7 MoBo only)
     l ATI® Radeon HD 4870 X2 2GB DDR5 PCIe 2.0 Dual Head DVI-HDCP Crossfire
     l 19" VX1962wm Viewsonic® ClearMotiv® Wide LCD 2ms. SuperHD 1680x1050NR 6000:1 SRS WOW HD Speakers
     l 150GB 10000RPM SATAII 300MB/s WD VelociRaptor™ 16MB Cache RAFF™ <9ms
l HD Ctrl. According To Motherboard and HD Type Selected
     l DVD+RW/DL/+R-R LightScribe™ Double Media 4.7/8.5GB 16x w/SW-Media
     l Logitech® Cordless Desktop® MX™ 5000 Laser w/BlueTooth® Keyb.+ Mouse
     l Genuine Microsoft® Windows® Vista™ Ultimate Edition 64Bit on DVD
     l CoolerMaster® V8 Silent Air Cooling 12cm Fan Heatsink Upg. (Core i7)
     l Asus® P6T Intel® X58-3xPCIe 2.0-Triple Ch.DDR3 1333/2000(O.C.)-1Gb Ethernet-6xSATA3Gb RAID 0/1/10/5-Digital Audio-8CH-S/PDIF 3xSLI&CrossFireX™ support
     l 1250W Cooler Master™ Quiet 12cm Ball Bearing Fan UL RS-C50-EMBA-D2
     l Xi® MTower™ CM-HAF 932 High Ventilation 3x23cm+1x14cm Quiet Fans -Front & Side Grid-4x FrontUSB+1394+eSATA- 6x 5 1/4" 5x 3 1/2"

Any issues stand out? I figure I should have plenty of power to run the game. Speakers and Stick are my only choices left to deal with now. I will have to wait a while before I drain the account any more though. I am trying to decide between a CH or Saitek.

Personally I would scrape the wireless keyboard and mouse setup BUT that is just personal preference. Grab a G15 keyboard and G5 mouse from Logitech and you are good to go.

I'd skip the wireless keyboard and mouse too.  The batteries are likely to die at the most inopportune time.

I had a wireless mouse at work and hated it.  I forced them to give me a wired optical mouse.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

My IT guys at work said performance problems aside the biggest issue with Vista was people trying to use it with computers that weren't designed for it. I am sure some problems will arise but I tried to configure the system in such a way that as far as memory utilization goes I will have plenty of power to spare. I already have a wired keyboard and mouse setup so I may utilize it if I need it. I can attest to the batteries going out as my old office setup was wireless and it never lasted. I have since gone to higher amp hour rechargeable batteries and they haven't been as big a problem.

I am really looking forward to this thing and getting back into the virtual skies.

Yep wireless and games generally won't work. My wife tried gaming on MS wireless setup and it constantly had problems like keys jamming on when she pressed many keys at once or keypresses not registering etc.

Not sure why so many have troubles with Wireless.  I use to use a Wireless Keyboard mouse set from Logitech, till I "broke" the mouse against a wall in anger, and keyboard became friends with a soda.  I now use a Wired Keyboard (Media center Logitech), but wireless mouse (LX6 Optical Logitech) and have no troubles at all.  Batteries last about 3 months, and there is no jumping from interference/dieing batteries,  I personally can't stand Wired mice due to the cord always catching on things, and causing restricted movement.
Also, with Logitech they have Battery warnings to make sure you know they are close to dieing.  Even without the software, some Mice have little lights on them that flash Red.

Then again I have always been picky. :D

Your building a screamer and overkill on some and skimping on others.  Forget the 965 and get the 920.  You can clock this processor to a stable 3.8 on air and over 4.6GHz (@1.4v) with h2O to the cpu only.  Save the 700.00 between the processor costs.  The Raptor 150's have a very high failure rate over the 300gb flavor.  Heatsink and fan you cant beat the OCZ Vendetta 2 with the i7 adaptor.  Get the Corsair or OCZ memory at 1600 natives over the Pat memory.  I prefer the EVGA X58 board at this time due to RMAing ASUS boards left and right for the past 6 months.

Well I upgraded to a 24 Widescreen Monitor and have since ordered my CH Pro pedals and Cougar Hotas stick. This will be a bit new for me since I used to fly with a twist stick rudder setup way back in my AW days. However since that was almost 10 years ago I think my learning curve will be on the high end anyway, lol!!!!!

I have a 24 inch monitor and it is like playing a whole new game. Not that you're not already.
