F6F Upgrade
« on: January 17, 2009, 10:28:42 AM »
Yes I searched. Only results for "F6F torpedoe" were from 2000, when the F6F was on the wishlist.
Both the first link and wiki (second link) make reference to the F6F-5 being capable of carrying a single Mark 13 torpedo on the centerline. A website on US Torpedoes (3rd link) states:

"Torpedoes had fin stabilizers, nose drag rings and tail shroud rings added, all of which worked to slow the torpedo after it was dropped so that it struck the water nose-first and at an acceptable speed.  These improved the drop characteristics such that the recommended aircraft maximum launch parameters were increased to a height of 2,400 feet (730 m) and a speed of 410 knots."

Would this upset the balance of a CV fight for now?

Ho's are like Speedos.
Nothing says you can't use it, but no one wants to see it.

If it wasn't used operationally you won't see it here.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

The only F6Fs to carry 20mm cannon operationally were the -5N night fighters, and they only carried two.

Tiny Tims weren't exactly anti-shipping missiles, either. They were basically a 500lb semi-armor piercing naval shell with a rocket motor attached strapped on. I've been asking for these for awhile because the F4U carried them as well (in addition to the centerline pylon for a 2000lb bomb options). The rockets were used against land targets as well as against shipping. In fact, one Allied strategy called for USMC Corsairs to utilize Tiny Tim rockets against German V-1 launch sites in Europe (nixed because George Marshall refused to allow Marines in "his" war, and the Allied land offensive was overtaking the sites, anyway).
