Enable Friendly Collisions
« on: January 19, 2009, 11:45:27 AM »
Well, it isn't a recent topic as the search brought up a few hits. So without delay.....

Enable Friendly collisions everywhere "except" (maybe) on the Runway, spawn points, and CVs. Did I miss one?
Would the Vulching by a horde slow down? Sure. Would folks fly a little more conservative...yes again. Would it be a popular idea, maybe not...well not likely, but a poll in the Arena Message might be in order.

Right now we collide with everything else!  My favs, #1 the ground, trees, CVs, invisable building pieces, hills, mountains, enemy plane parts, why not my squaddies! It will require increased SA, communications, and the 4 on 1 or 40 on 1 will dissipate. Each will take a turn now trying to bounce an enemy...cooperation would rule out.

Since F3 (External View) is enabled on the runway, maybe even a code where each spawn has different coordinates, with 3-4 on the runway and the rest in a line on the taxiway if collisions on the runway is the only other option. ie Collisions On/Off may be the only switch now.  Just a thought in passing. I have flown in the Racing Events with it on and it is really a hoot!   :D  :O  Talk about "white knuckles" and a deathgrip on the Stick and throttle.

Maybe a Thursday (or other day) Treat - like a Titanic Tuesday event, on a trial basis.

This idea don't sound half bad. I think its a stupidity when i go through my squad mates tank like it wasn't even there. This idea would definitely get people to communicate more on the ground and in air; the problem is, if we don't crash into each other when on runway, after we take off we would collide. Keep the friendly collision to a range sort of thing, like until you are 1.5k away from base the FC comes on.

My take on the idea would be to engage friendly collisions outside the darbar of the base you upped from. just a thought...

Only problem I can see coming from this is when a player lands at a different field than they took off from.

There are many reasons against friendly collisions, but the biggest one is:

Griefing.

Friendly collisions on means any friendly is a potential danger to you. New players on their first flights will crash into you without knowing what they do. I can't stand you? Ok, I will just wait 'till you rtb with 5 kills, then I'm gonna just fly in front of you until I can force a crash. You can't even shoot me to prevent this behaviour.

Friendly collisions are disabled for the same reasons as why killshooter isn't off.

MA would be a mess without it.

Lusche,
You make valid points here and I am certainly not going to be happy if I am on fire or wounded and can't get someone to move off the runway. Yet, these are also real life/flying issues too. We don't have ATC but we do have communications... It might mean I ditch or try and put it down in the center of a runway and hope my brakes stop me in time. (provided I have a landing gear thats still intact)  :D Just saying. And Yes, once someone causes me to die with a handful of kills there might be words .... of encouragement.

First off its not that simple. You can't enable friendly collisions in the air, and not have them enabled on the runway.

So thats a bust for the idea right there. To fix that (if it could be fixed) would require a total game code rewrite.
And for friendly collisions, nope, just not worth it.

Second, any friendly collisions on is absolute death on any kind of formation flying.

Say I'm lead bomber, I have 2 other guys joining on me in buffs, and a couple of  escorts.
But about the point we all get up and headed to target, guy # 2 warps a smidge, runs into me, and I take damage and crash.

Mission is busted, 2 guys down, to accomplish what?

Plus I totally agree with Lusche, it opens cans of worms that are just best left unopened.

As for the racing thing, possibly I can see that working. But it still allows someone who is not in the lead the potential to knock out someone who is. Not what I'd consider fair play at all.

For a specialized event, possibly, but certainly not worth the time it would take to implement.

no to the idea for the reason Lusche stated,

Whilst it was funny watching 2 bandits run into each other fighting over a kill it was not cool when you hit a friendly you didnt see or someone purposefully barging into your fight and hitting you.  HTC has got this one right.

Could you imagine the screaming on country/range vox and comms if friendly collisions were enabled? It would be like a traffic jam of gangsters on the LA freeway, armed and high on rock & 45s, otw to a gangsta convention. Its bad enough vis-a-vis friendly on enemy let alone friendly on friendly. It would be a mess, long friendships would be broken, people would be stalked, brother would turn on brother. And the poor noobs would get, literally, chased right out the sky.

Never forget this is all very serious stuff.
