Lag Rolls for Breakfast
« on: December 06, 2000, 04:32:00 PM »
Has anyone been able to use a lag roll in fighter combat in AH?  I tried a few times but the AC's do not slow down much at all even with a lot of rudder. If the nose sinks when rolling AC just gains speed.  I would think that the ailerons would create enough drag during the roll and slow the AC.  A wide barrel roll/with rudder slows the AC some but I was never been able to setup a shot using a lag roll so I usually went with a hi yoyo.  Any comments?

Yes, I use lag rolls fairly frequently when flying the P47.  It's a requirement. <G>  I try to use barrel roll attacks as well, but I normally screw them up and die horribly.

Try watching Pappy or Torque in their C-Hogs.. they can lag roll with the best of them.

I suspect if you aren't getting the results you want that you aren't using enough back stick in the roll.  The displacement you get is not from slowing down, but rather from making your flight path longer to get to the same place the bogey is going but with a higher airspeed.  The point is to avoid overshooting and minimize closure while preserving your E, not to burn it all by slowing down.  You want to stay fast, you just need to keep from closing too fast or overshooting the target.

I suspect you are using more of a pure aelieron roll intead of a true lag roll.  A lag roll will combine a fairly slow roll with back stick to displace your flight path from the other fellow's.  The harder you pull back in the roll, the farther displaced you will get, and also the more E you will burn from pulling G's.  The trick is to manage it so that you pull just enough to keep from overshooting, but not so much that you burn too much speed and lose your E advantage.

Thank you for the help-I have a better idea now of how and when to attempt these rolling manuevers.  The energy retention in the last FM does seem to make things a bit harder though.
