I've mentioned that I'm a retail salemen in the "What do you do" thread. I work at Radio Shack, in northern Michigan.
I was hired in as part-time, expecting to pick up full-time. What a pipe dream. I work hard, doing work that no one else seems willing to do i.e shoveling/trash removal/cleaning the men's restroom/sweeping the floor in the back/etc. Granted, the manager will shovel, which is nice considering he's there 50+ hours a week and seems to really loathe his job and life in general. He's a hell of a nice guy, great boss, and would be a cool friend, so this negativity is not directed towards him in any way.
I have to commute 45 minutes to get to work, and I don't ask for much. The only things I've asked for is ONE particular day off a week (Monday) and that I work longer shifts than 3 hours. I realize that the manager has a boss of his own, and has to follow orders like a good little drone, but it's ridiculous. I went from averaging 20-28 hours a week (PART-TIME) to 6.30. I wonder how Radio Shack considers that to be part-time? I'm guessing the District Manager thinks that human life can be sustained from 6.30 hours in a week at $7.40 an hour?
Sure, we get SPIFFS and commission, but not everyone wants to buy a cell phone or service plan. It's hard to get commission when the rate needed is ungodly high, especially if you're getting screwed out of working any decent amount of hours.
I guess I should be thankful that I have a job, and get some time to work, it could be worse, but I wish it was better.
I like my job, it's better then cooking over a hot grill, or being in the service. It's relatively stress free, but that has changed recently. If you don't sell a certain amount of product, you face the chance of getting fired. I guess the big wigs won't recognise the fact that I cannot make someone buy something, and they must not realize that Wal-Mart is in the same plaza. People don't want to buy the outrageously priced Radio Shack merchandise when they can go to Wally World and get it far cheaper. At least Radio Shack doesn't have a bouncer posted at the doors....
I'm sure people (possibly on this board) have it worse than I do, but it's nice to vent and hear a different opinion/point of view.
