Gun question
« on: January 24, 2009, 12:38:47 PM »
I bought a 8mm Turkish mauser at the end of last year. I have put 50 rounds of ammunition through this rifle and everything is smooth and properly functioning.  But, for the last few days I have been wondering if I could take the action off of it and use it to make a .50cal bmg for 1000 yard or futher bench shooting.
Any advice on this will be greatly apreciated.

8mm bolt for a 12.5 mm cartridge..

I'm certainly no expert, but doesn't that sound a bit dangerous?

Not to be insulting, but I hope this is just a troll. That has to be the dumbest question I've ever seen.  :huh

In no way, shape or form is it possible. It could not be done, and no gunsmith would attempt it.

I wont go into things like chamber pressures, sizes and the like just trust me when i say it would be smarter for you to buy a Barrett or something similar.

I will just say this:  If you do manage to do it, please have someone video the test fire so we can watch it on YouTube. :)

Well where would I be able to get my hands on an action that would hold up to those kinds of pressures?

Considering your level of knowledge, do yourself a favor and buy one of the lower priced single shot rifles made for 50 BMG. The sort of work you are talking about is best left to expert machinists and gunsmiths.

Plus, seeing as how you're apparently looking to go the cheap route and convert an antique into a timebomb, I'll also assume you're unaware that .50 BMG ammo costs several dollars a ROUND. Like in the order of $3-$5 a shot, even for rounds made with reused brass. A days shooting at the range can cost you more in AMMO than you would spend on a smaller RIFLE.

At one of the gunshows here I have seen the amunition average right at $1 a round. And those were with lake city brass too. Besides you are right about the mauser action probably being a ticking time bomb.   But I would like to know where I could get an action that is made specifically for .50 bmg  with out spending a $10k on a rifle.

You can get upper assemblies for an AR series rifle thats built to fire a .50, but I dunno how accurate or expensive they are. And, watch gunshops for .50 rifles. They usually sell used for much cheaper than they were new, my local shop had one for $1,200 recently that would have sold new (scoped, bipod and stripped down for competition) for over $4,000.

Also, don't buy ammo at gun shows- you usually get what you pay for. Most of that cheap stuff is cheaper because of the extremely low quality of the components used, and/or because its bought in bulk from some third-world warehouse where its sat wet and unmaintained for decades. I've heard horror stories about that stuff, both the ammo and the guns. Buy from an established and licensed gunshop or direct from a manufacturer.

I paid a visit to my local gun shop the other day,  they wanted $33 for remington 8x57mm sp .323 bullet diameter.  There were only 20 rounds per box. That is $1.65 per round of 8x57mm.  The ammo for my turk mauser isnt cheap either. Anyhow treize I looked at those ar uppers but there are still 2-3k, what I need is an action only.
