Qestion about ammo load in the P47s
« on: December 16, 2001, 01:47:00 PM »
After flying the P47D25 last night with 100% ammo load out and also fuel load. The plane was one really hard to controle and mostly stalling because of my lack of Flying it. But after i get back into the copit again, I select 6 50.cal machine guns and also the lowest amount of ammo load i could find. OWW boy did this make a differnce.

But after Testing some things out, by flying a P47D25 to 500ft with 100% full Ammo load and shotting about 1000 rounds of ammo out of the thing. Then made the same level of ammo that would be in a P47D25 with 6 50cal with min ammo load. I found it was still harder to controle AFTER exspelling most of the ammo to a level were the light P47 had.

Qestion?
Does Aces high remove the bullet weight out of the Flight model of the P47 when u shot ammo from the AC. Just a qestion that has been bugging me for some time  :).

I believe ammo weight is reduced as you fire.  If you are having a hard time flying the jug you may want to only take 50% fuel at first.

Just the Jug Burns Fuel at such a Rate I allways take 75% and 1 drop tanks with me on a missions.

Other than that, 50% the jug would burn it up like nothink. I am still wondering why the JUG burns fuel at such a rate  in the MA.

Well, keep in mind that the GUNS also have weight.  A plane with 8 guns will handle a bit worse than one with 6, all else being equal.

As far as how fast the Jug uses fuel, historically, they were fuel hogs.  That big 2300hp radial loves fuel, and it shows.

Wasn't the Jug's fuel consumption rate a gallon a minute?

Or was that a gallon a mile?

I can never remember for sure.

I think it was a gallon a minute.

"I think it was a gallon a minute."

More than that by a lot, unless you're talking about cruise settings.  I think combat fuel usage was in the neighborhood of 85-90 gallons per hour.

According to 9th AF vet Robert Brulle in his book Angels Zero, the jug used 300 gallon per hour under combat power.  Cruising speed used about 50 gallons per hour.  Gallon a minute is close enough.  ;)
