The ULTIMATE John Denver thread!
« on: January 28, 2009, 01:05:42 AM »
With all of these musical artist threads I felt it was time to go 'old school' and feature an artist that is probably the single most influential artist ever.  Greater than John Lennon?  You bet!  Greater than the Jonas Bros.?  Pffffft, please.  I'm talking about none other than the man that could take a guitar, a plaintive voice, and make all of the milquetoast people cry; Henry John "John Denver" Deutschendorf!

Think of all the hit songs he's had; Rocky Mountain High, Country Roads, Annie's Song, etc..., and his sensitive, heart-felt lyrics and you get a combo that can't be touched by anyone!  Plus, the guy was an aviation NUT!  Too bad he decided to take a ride on the Otis Redding Express though, kind of sad   :cry.  But there's no denying the man had TALENT!  Writer, singer, musician, environmentalist, animal lover, he had it ALL!

So go and get your granny glasses, don that down vest, and dust off all of your old LP's and sit back, listen, and get 'high' with John Denver...Rocky Mountain High, that is!

Another great song from him.  So sad to see a talent like that go.

I got a chance to see John Denver at the Minnesota State Fair about 2 weeks before he released his new "Rocky Mountain High" album. He sat down and played his old stuff. Stood up, loosened up, told some jokes, then sat down and played the whole Rocky Mountain High Album, both sides.

Needless to say I bought that record when it came out, wore it out playing myself to sleep at night.

Yes he was one of the greats.

As to his best, thats hard to pick.
He had at least a dozen ballads that I love, Darcy Farrow is one of my favorites.
He had an instrumental medley in Rocky Mountain Suite (Late winter early spring when everyone goes to Mexico)

And then there was "Up in a meadow in Jasper Alberta, two men and four ponys on a long lonesome ride"

He's been there when I was up, when I was down, he helped me though some hard times.
What more can you ask from a friend than that.

Thanks Diablo
And Thanks John!

"Take Me Home, Country Roads" is one of my all-time favorite songs.  He was a unique original.  There will never be another like him.

I liked that he stood up to the censorship mommies with the singer from Twisted Sister.  Speaks a good deal about him.

Apart from having an absolutely wonderful way with arranging words to music, having a stunning set of pipes, being able to play classic acoustic guitar perfectly, and being a fine human being, the guy was a tremendously gifted entertainer.  Seeing John Denver perform was a hilight in the life of anyone fortunate enough to attend.

The day he lost his life was a heartbreaking day for my entire family.  Still brings a mournful sorrow to my heart just thinking about it.
