Need advice
« on: January 28, 2009, 05:03:23 PM »
*I'm trying to quit smoking*
*I can't afford prescriptions, or patches, etc*
*I'm wanting to do it "cold turkey"*

Any tips on ways to make it seem like I don't want to strangle people due to kicking an addiction?  I've heard chewing lots, and lots of gum...

Any others, "wives tales", secret medicinal ways (think drunken raisins to cure arthritis).
forecast for tonight is alcohol, low standards and poor decisions

Never have that first cigarette in the morning.

All kidding aside, you have to want to quit.

If you do not truly want to quit, no sort of cease smoking program will work.

If you truly want to quit, you don't need any sort of cease smoking program.

Make it to 3 days.  After that, it's all mental.

Good luck.

It only takes 24 hours for the nicotine to burn out of your system.  Takes 21 days to change/alter/develop a habit.  I have recently quit; been 4 months completely smoke free. It took 3 tries with patches over close to 18 months. Like the others have said you have to want to quit to be able to do it. Here is some advice for you gum will help with some of the cravings, and if you don't get much exercise you will want to start doing it more.

 :salute and good luck.

Yep, 3 days is needed for the physical addiction from all I've read.  After that it's mind over matter.  If you don't mind, it don't matter.  Some things that help:  Keep your hands busy.  You are used to holding that smoke.  Hold a pen or something instead.  When having a craving, do pierced lip breathing, as in, tighten your lips into a small circle, as if you are hitting a smoke.  Breathe long and slow.  The craving will pass in about 10 minutes or so.  Stay busy!  Don't sit there and keep dwelling on "Man, I want a smoke."  You have to break your body's physical habits too.  Your hand is used to bringing that smoke up.  Find something else for it to do during a craving (dirty thoughts aside).  Cold turkey is very hard and very often not successful, but not impossible.  People do it every day.  Try this for now, don't smoke in the car anymore.  Once you are used to that, cut out another time of day you usually smoke.  It's a process.  You can do it.  Think of the addiction like it's a real person.  Yell at it.  Tell it you're gonna kick it's sorry bellybutton like there's no tomorrow.  You can do it man.  Kick its ass!

You want to stop. (as opposed to Quit) just words I know but word association is a strong thing with us opposable thumb types. If you are able to carry about toothpaste and a brush, when a craving sets in go brush your teeth (you'll have gorgeous teeth by the time your finished...or no gums). If that is not an option a bottle of water. This also has the benefit of cleansing you. Both will keep your hands busy. Also do not think after a week just a puff won't hurt. And if you are really getting frustrated with people during this time, think of the penguins (Madagascar) "Just smile and wave boys, just smile and wave"

You have to want to quit as others have stated. I quit April 5, 2007 and have not smoked a single ciggarette since. I used a drug that the company provided, can't remember the name right now, but until I actually decided to quit it didn't do me any good.

I still get a craving for a smoke on occasion but the occasions are getting fewer with more time inbetween them.

Hang in there bro, I smoked for over 40 years and managed to quit, you can do it too...if you really want to.

Lots of cardio work..... I always feel like smoking less when I've been working out a lot that week.

Set a fitness goal.... smoking will get in the way of that.

If you've got friends or family members (especially if they live with you) that smoke, good luck on trying to quit....
Chances are, you'll give in to the temptation if you see them smoking or going out to smoke..
There is pretty much no way to quit (unless you have willpower of steel) until you remove yourself from a smoking
environment or change your smoking environment into a non-smoking one...  This is the first step....

Eat healthy and stay hydrated..  Lots of hydration will help flush the nicotine out of your system more thoroughly
and give a chance for the appropriate receptors in your brain to get back to normal.  Don't drink alcohol because this will likely trigger your smoking again...
People are less apt to smoke after eating healthy..  Instead of coffee in the morning, drink black tea...
Has almost the same amount of caffeine as coffee..  Drinking tea instead of coffee in the morning is a good idea
because most people equate coffee with cigarettes...  They go hand in hand...
Drinking black tea won't make you quit, but you won't make the association of coffee with cigarette..

Basically, it's just a change of habits....  Some people need a little help along the way with medication or gum..
You don't need to feel embarrassed about taking medication for quitting smoking...

Nicotine withdrawal isn't pleasant..  It's nowhere near as severe as heroin or alcohol withdrawal, but it does come with its own
problems..

Finally, if you think you need help quitting, talk to a doctor about Chantix..  I hear it's the latest and greatest when it comes to helping people quit...
It shuts off the receptors in your brain for nicotine, so you basically don't crave smoking..

Good Luck!

I have no personal experience, but my brother, started smoking at an early age. I'll guess about 15, he's 18 now. At 17, he finally decided enough was enough, he was down to like a pack a day of smoking.

What he did was, just lock himself in his room, and didn't go anywhere for a week or so during the summer... Course, he started again, but he quit for almost a year after doing something as simple as that.
No one knows what the future may bring.
