Working on my upgrade
« on: January 30, 2009, 09:20:13 PM »
I installed the other 2 Gb of Kinston HyperX DDR2 800 in my machine tonight but I couldn't get it to boot without overvolting it to 2.1V (rated at 4-4-4-12 @ 2.0V).  My other two sticks work fine at 2.0V.  I tried the new pair alone and still couldn't boot under 2.1V.  Probably not a big deal as Kingston won't void the lifetime warranty as long as they are under 2.2 or 2.3V (can't remember at the moment) but I'm thinking I'll RMA them and see if another set work as advertised.

I also got the second 8800 GTS 512 in and SLI'd with my other.  It works but I haven't had a chance to really try it yet.  What a PITA.  I had to almost totally unwire my motherboard and everything inside and move stuff around to get it in there.  Things are tight with two of those monsters inside.

In doing so I had to replace the round IDE cable to my storage and back-up drives and replace it with a more flexible ribbin cable.  Now my back-up drive is listed as a "removable storage device" and nothing on it is recognized.  The BIOs see's it but doesn't know what it is other than a drive.  I might have to play with jumper settings so that's where I'm off to now.

Oh, and I was expecting XP to see at least 2.5-2.8 Gb of this 4 Gb of RAM.  With 1 Gb of video RAM it's only seeing 2.2 Gb, quite a bit short of what I had hoped for.  Oh well, at least RAM is cheap.

Never heard of that Baldeagle. That is increasing the voltage for the ram. XP pro should recognize up to 3.5 gigs. Mine recognizes 3.25.

What motherboard are you using BaldEagl?  I thought I remember reading about stock voltages on RAM not booting with Intel 965 chipsets.  Also 2.2Gb doesn't seem right, but could be the SLI thing.  I've never tried/experienced a similar setup so I cannot comment.

XP recognizes 4G of Ram. It only utilizes 3-3.5 gigs for various reasons these forums have talked about for years(Too much info to retype). The 1st Beta version of XP ran on more than 4G but they scaled it back for some reason I forgot...... LOL

Maybe take those timings to 5-5-5-15 and give it a shot. I think you know in SLI it will utilize less Ram.....then non SLI. Maybe seeing XP utilizes less ram the timings need to be lowered a tad to boot to windows. Worth a quick shot and you may be able to run under 2 volts.

BaldEagl I believe you will have to drop the RAM speed to 667 Mhz to get it stable even at 2.1 volts.

I found out what was up with the RAM after visiting newegg and reading a few reviews.  The BIOS automatically re-set my RAM from 800 to 667.  As soon as I upped it to 800 I was able to back off to the recommended 2.0V and boot without issue.  It evidently didn't like 4-4-4-12 timings at that low a speed.  It defaults to 667 @ 5-5-5-15 @ 1.85V on install.  I caught the timings and volts but didn't catch the speed.

I'm also now seeing 2.25 Gb of RAM.  I guess that makes sense because there's a little more than 1 Gb of video memory plus I had totally forgotten about the memory on the X-Fi (not sure how much that is).  I did a little reading and found out that XP also allocates memory to each USB port and various other things on boot-up which explains why different people see different amounts of RAM even with similar set-ups.  I guess I'm in the ballpark of where I should be.

Get this:  The problem with the hard drive being recognized was that I had totally bent two pins right down to the bottom of the connector.  They were flat down in there and bent at almost 90 degrees where they hit the sides.  I'm guessing it happened while I was trying to force that largly unpliable round IDE cable into a tight spot behind the video cards.  As I was looking at those bent pins thinking uh-oh, I heard a little plink.  Another pin just fell out.   :cry

Figuring I had nothing to lose I straightened the two bent pins with a tiny screwdriver and a tweezer.  Then I tried to force the lost pin back into it's hole hoping and praying it would make the right connection just by force.  No go.  I couldn't get it into the hole so I just hooked the IDE cable up without it and voiala.  The drive was recognized and works perfectly.  It reads, it writes, it sautees and purees.   :rofl

So then I went into the game to test the new SLI set-up.  I had the Nvidia control panal set to force my card to my monitor refresh rate (59-60 hz).  I jumped into the game and was getting frame rates in the 280's.  So I alt tabbed just to check and I was right, it was set to force refresh rate.  So then I exited the game and went to the video settings for the game.  I turned off unlimited frame rate and set it to maximun frame rate 60.  I jumped back in the game and I'm still getting 63-65 fps.  These cards just don't like to be slowed down I guess.

I'm running 8x anitaliasing, 2x anistropic filtering and have just about every other setting in the Nvidia control panal maxed (but not quite).  Picture quality is astounding.  It actually seems better than before running the same setting.  Not sure how that could be but it seems like it.  Alt-tabbing out of the game and coming back in all my graphics re-draw in about one to two seconds which is lightspeed fater than before.  I can count every rivit on the wings of my 190A-8 (good job to whoever did that default skin).  These cards together in SLI have some serious horsepower.

I'm still having a problem though and that is that as I look around in snap mode I get some BIG time stairstepping on the cockpit window frames.  I'd almost call it tearing but not quite.  It only lasts a fraction of a second but it's a bit annoying.  I've tried playing with the video settings in the control panal and gotten it a little better but not better enough.  Still, if I'm forced with this trade-off I'm not sure it's really all that bad.  It seems isolated to the forward window frames and the wing edges.  I'd listen to any tips.

The other negative is that my lower card is almost on the bottom of the case (ptobably less than 1/4" clearance) and has extremely restricted airflow.  It's running consistently 10 degrees warmer than the upper card.  I wish I could set the fan speeds individually in Riva Tuner to compensate.

I'll play with it some more over the weekend and see what happens.

I obviously had you with the wrong motherboard but still you only read 2.25 GB? Is that in the bios or in Windows?

Crank that bad boy up on the anti alias settings(16X). You should be able to run full boar in SLI. Also try 75 on the refresh. I run my GTX280 wide open and it not only puree's but vaporizes. :rofl :rofl :rofl I saw 500fps in DA high in sky with vsync off(I always run it on just wanted to see!) and run 250-300 in MA.

Cahllenge or yourself could probably clarify this but can't you go to 1066 on memory in your bios?

For bottom vid card you could raise whole case up with a couple of pieces of 2by4 or 4by4 and cut out for a fan to blow right at the fan on the card. I have a 8800GTS and it runs hot so I cut a whole in side of case and put a old CPU fan right at it. It drop my temps 13 degrees idle and gaming doesn't  raise in temps like it did befor. Just a thought if you don't mind case modding.

I figured out how to run the fan speeds independently in RivaTuner and now have both cards idling at about 52C and running at about 60C under load.

I'm going to try running just this new card by itself tonight and see if the stepping isn't an issue with just this particular card.

Might as well crank AA and ASF up all the way, I have both maxed for AH and my single 8800GT runs it just fine, I doubt a SLI set-up will have any problems with it.
