MS Sidewinder Census
« on: October 30, 1999, 09:07:00 AM »
It might be a good idea for all of us who use the Sidewinder joystick to post the following here:
1. Type (ForceFeedback, Precision Pro, etc)
2. Software controller version (3.0, 3.02, etc.)
3. Windows configuration (Sidewinder, CombatStick, Poll Interrupts, etc.)
4. Pedals used (yes or no)
5. Whether it works okay, and what steps were taken to make it so.
6. Basic explanation of slider config for Roll, Pitch, and Yaw.

Hopefully HTC may be able to make use of such information.

My Sidewinder is:
1. Precision Pro
2. Controller version 3.02
3. Configured as Sidewinder. Poll interrupts is off.
4. No pedals.
5. Was okay after editing stick.cfg file and installing controller ver.3.02.
6. Sliders are configured as follows:
Yaw - exponential curve.
Roll - 100% across (constant angle).
Pitch - exponential curve.

1.Sidewinder Precision Pro USB
2.Sidewinder Software v3.0
3.Configured as SPPro USB
4.No pedals
5.Always worked fine
6.Sliders all set as half parabolic curves

NB: If I do hit the max deflection very quickly(like stupidly fast), I get the "too rapid" message - but I never get the controls lockup other people are reporting.

MS Sidewinder 3d pro
vs 3.02
Poll interrupts on
Cftj 3 enabled Y axis limited to 90%
No pedals
High deadband across, all sliders on a curve
no more than 20% from the top.
Soundblaster 16

I have sever spiking problems. These problems are _not_ from the stick moving around rudders etc. When my stick spikes keys will be triggerred, my hat will switch views etc.
Problem declined slightly with poll interrupts but still happens. Problem is much worse in external views.

Sidwinder Pre Pro
ver 3.00 software
configured as sidwinder precision pro
no peddles, use the twist function
poll with interupts is enabled
worked fine from the start, I didnt need to edit or do anything to get it to work
roll is 100%
pitch and yaw are a exponential curve

I have had no problems since day 1 getting my stick to work. In case it matters I am running win 95 as well, I dont have a problem with anti stick stirring feature unless I am really puposfully trying to kick it in.

rudder was very touchy pre ver. 0.36
0.36 locked up even on runway engine off
if I used rudders.
Ver.0.37 best I've ever seen with Ms stick
THANK YOU! for the stick damper, all is well
at my house (default settings)

Rosco. I have windows 98. There is no stick calibration in the control panel for my pre pro. I wondered if there is one in win 95.

TT, in your profiler file for Aces High under Settings, what is your range of motion, Max or Min?

I dont use profiler. I tried it. It made no difference.

BTW HT called me at home and had me do some test with my stick. He felt that the problem was in the MS softwhare (big supprise ). He said that they have zero problems with the higher quailty sticks. But ive been useing this thing for a year. I,d hate to have to buy and get use to a new type of stick.

TT, no there isnt a calabration option in the control panel, I used to have one for my 3D pro but when I bought my new stick and installed the drivers for it I lost that option, and might add, dont miss it, I used to always have to recalabrate the stupid thing but with the new stick and drivers it hasnt been a problem ,the darned thing just works, guess I am lucky.
I checked in my profiler software for the settings I am using in AH in case it helps.

Range of motion is max
Dead Zone is small
MS DOS Emulation is CH Flightstick Pro

I never used to bother with the profiler software but it allows me to now double the functions of all 8  buttons...I like that!
Like having 16 buttons instead of 8.

The thing that makes my jaw a little tight. Is im seeing more stickstirring than before.

All this thing is doing is making it very difficult to be competitive with guys who dont have the problem.

I just gave it another try with my stick dampened to the max. and I locked up trying to follow a B17 in a spit. That is absurd.

Thats funny, I just came from the arena and while rtbing I tried to make the anti stick stirring kick in, I couldnt! I shook the stick to the point of breaking it and it would not kick in. I though they turned it off tonight.
Hang in there, they'll get it fixed.

1. SW FF pro
2. 3.02
3. as SW, no poll interrupts
4. no pedals (twisting for rudder)
5. works fine after I DISABLED RECENTERING force
6. all axis sliders in a straight line (--> curve), deadband very small, slightly wider on rudders, dampener to default

Kirin out

Here is the test. open the stick calibration window. You will see a feild with cross hairs and a slip indicater. move your stick very slowly in any direction. when the crosshairs hit the edge of the feild your jstick should have hit its limit of travel. In my case i can keep moveing my stick for another 1/4 of an inch. now twist your rudder slowly. My stick hits the border at the right time on the left. But has a 1/4 in. of stick overrun on the right. No atttempts at recentering work.

Some people have fessed up that they cant make the lockup happen even if they try. This explaines the recent increse in stick stirring.

Cant we just say it was a nice try and turn the damn thing off.

1. Precision Pro
2. Controller Version 3.02
3. Digital Gameport on soundcard (Xitel Storm VX)
4. No pedals
5. Worked OK at the beginning of the
beta, but spikes and keys are triggered
since .34 (I think).  Stick loses
configuration after a few minutes.  Have
tried every tip I've seen on this board to
   no avail.
6. Roll - 100%
   Pitch - Inverse bell
   Yaw - 100%

I upgraded my system between one of the beta upgrades from a pii 266 /w Win95 to a Athlon 600 /w Win98.  I'm not sure if my stick problems started after the upgrade or not.
