Corsairs and Niks and newbies oh my!!
« on: December 22, 2000, 11:37:00 PM »
I have been watching this Chog and Nik debate rage on for quite a while now. We have all seen the grizzled ww2 flight simmer's view, but i think i may be able to add a newer players perspective to this debate.
The one side of the argument, lets call it the "Chogs and Niks are evil" side would have you believe that anyone could just stop playing Quake and log onto aces high and start shooting everyone out of the sky within minutes as long as they are flying one of these planes.
This is just not true. Myself and 2 of my friends Deezcamp and Diashi just started playing aces about a month and a half ago. We were your proverbial "quakeheads," albeit with one thing in common, we all really like aviation and WW2 airplanes so we decided to give aces a try.
For the first several weeks we all got our butts served to us on a plate constantly. Even Deezcamp, who actual flies airplanes in real life, got destroyed the first couple weeks. It took one of them 2 weeks to get an air to air kill, and it took the other guy almost a month to get one !!!
Many many of these flight were in Chogs and niks.
Frankly none of us knew what a chog or a nik was. We just started trying out whatever plane we could get off the ground. The first three times i flew the Chog i compressed and lawn darted it!
I often hear it said that "everyone" just flies Niks and Chogs. Once again, in my short time in time in the game , i really haven't noticed one or even two planes that "everyone" flies. Usually when i get shot down, it is by a plane that i have never flown like the Yak or the La5. Because i have never flown them, i have no idea what their capabilities are.
Thankfully for me , I read an article which i believe was by Lephturn outlining some ideas for newbies. One of which was to start out by flying the Spitfire because its fairly easy to fly.
From my short experience, it doesn't seem to matter what the plane is, its the skill of the pilot that makes the difference. I hear a lot of poeple complain in this manner "I am (____insert_Uber_pilot_name_he re_____) and i got shot down by some newbie that was just spray and pray in a Chog." I understand the frustration, but even in real life the great aces got caught in bad situations and got wasted by far less skilled pilots. Just look at the Red Baron, how many poeple (outside of you hardcore WW1 nutz!!) remebers the name of the guy that shot him down.

I guess what it really boils down to for me is this: when you first start playing this game you are looking to the more experienced pilots to see how they fly and act. I really hope more of the experienced pilots would take the chip off their shoulder and rather than blasting the new guys that fly the chogs and the niks, maybe give them some advice on some of the other planes in the game that are cool. Let them know how fast the tiffie is on the deck or how manouverable a spit can be. They will learn something and they may just ditch that F4u or Nik.

Nice post and I agree.  Particularly about the diversity being greater than is often claimed on this BBS.  Then again I'm not one of the players calling for these two aircraft to be banned.

Welcome to Aces High to you and your friends.

Oh, and it was either Capt. Brown in a Sopwith Camel or the Aussies on the ground who shot the Red Baron down for the last time.

Ugh Karnak, ware you from again?

Welcome and thanks for the perspective Gunslayer. I have been at Aces High for over a year now, almost a year and a half. I still don't consider myself a good cyber pilot, but I am OK. I use the N1K2 for close base defense and the C-Hog for base attack. The B17 for most bombing, the Lancaster for large base bombing and the B-26 for Vehicle base bombing. Each one has its use. Some are quote UBER or DWEEB, but if it is in the game, use it!

towd... LOL.  That is the way of things.  Personally I'll take new guys with great attitudes like Gunslayer over all of the guys that quit.

Gunslayer, glad to hear you and your buddies are enjoying Aces High.  Feel free to email me at sconrad@hfx.eastlink.ca any time if you would like to set up some training, or just ask some questions about the different AC and fighting styles in Aces High.  I love to chat about this stuff!

BTW, the reason I suggest a plane like the Spit IX for new pilots is twofold.  First, it is one of the best all-around planes in the game.  It is a jack of all trades that can do well in almost any style of air to air combat, whereas many other planes tend to have strengths only in certain areas with weaknesses that can be easily exploited.  The second reason I suggest the Spit IX is that it has great guns but a limited ammo supply.  Learning with a limited ammo supply will teach you to hold your fire until you have a good shot, which is a very good practice.  When I get in a gunnery slump I'll go fly the Spit Vb for a while to force myself to make every round count.

Remember, that every time some fellow calls you a "C-Hog Dweeb" or something like that, what they really mean is "Wow I am really embarrased that I got blasted by a newbie after I bounce him with a huge advantage."    This is true for "N1k Dweeb", "HO Dweeb", or any other supposed derogatory comment like that.  I find the best way to deal with it is to throw a <S> (salute) over the radio and keep on trucking.  Hey, we all get frustrated sometimes, so I've been guilty of this myself on occasion.

I think your point is a great one.  The best way to get folks out of the more popular planes, is to extole the virtues of some of the other rides.  One of the coolest things I have done is to help get a few pilots turned on to the F4U-1D after the 1C came out.  A few of those fellows are now 1D experts that far exceed my own abilities in that plane!  (The bastiges now waste my P-47 on a regular basis too!    Gunslayer's suggestion is a good one, it not only will work, but it's very personally rewarding to help new folks fall in love with that special plane.
