I think I'm probably preachier (is that a word?) than most on the whole pit-bull, stupid owners who put themselves & their families in their path by choice, etc.

My sons little chihuahua went to go play with the pit pull in the back yard kitty-corner from ours... he's able squeeze through the slits in the wooden fence, as it's one of those staggered things, and it's a miniature chihuahua (or toy, or whatever he's called. It's the little one).

The big dog was blocking his path to getting back to the fence to return home, and I didn't even think twice about grabbing a hammer to disassemble the blocking structures his/her owner put up to allow for enough space for my little dog to get out.

I guess it wasn't that smart.  But I think I'll lighten up on stupid owners some after having realized that I am one as well.

I still blame stupid owners, as well as the breed.  Who in the world babysits children when they own a pit-bull, chow, and rottweilers?

Here is the pit-bull attack from Monday.

The whole notion that one breed of dog is more prone to attack over anouther is a bunch of crap. I grew up with Labs, my best friend from age 7 through high school had a Chow and a Rottweiler, and my ex wife and I had a Pit Bull/Shepard mix for 15 years and raised both our kids with that dog. I've had many, many friends over the years that owned "vicious" dogs.

I've been bitten by a dog one time in my entire life after living around all breeds of dogs my entire life. Wanna guess which one bit me?  My Labrador Retriever when I was 14 bit me on my arm. 8 stiches and still have a scar.

It's not the dog, it's the owner.

Might I recommend that people intending to debate this again go dig up the multi-page discussion from just a few weeks ago.  I don't have the energy to type it all again.

Pitbull attacks are the only dog attacks that receive media attention because the stories help sell advertising.  Sensationalism sells, just like super-infrequent shark attacks make headlines but the dozens who die from jellyfish stings every year go unreported.

A dog's behavior reflects the character of its owner, and that's that.

Mom:    :salute

Saving your dog from a far larger, prone to visciousness animal is perfectly reasonable...

However...it might not hurt to put some chicken wire over that part of the fence your miniature dog sneaks through to keep him/her from becoming an appetizer.

Also:  people from the Chicagoland/Metro area say "kitty-corner" and  to those who say "katty-corner".  It can be colloquial.

While I agree about it being the owner not the dog in some of the cases.  I live out in the country and since a few cities in central Arkansas have banned the pit bull breed, some people have moved out here.  My next door neighbor has 4 dogs and 2 of them appear to be pits.  These dogs have gotten onto our property and harassed our dogs and horses; also they have stood on our back deck steps and barked at anyone leaving the house that way.  Now by AR state laws I have the right to shoot to kill the animals if I feel they are a threat to myself or livestock.

Yep.  These sensationalist reports give the false impression that large dogs like the Pit Bull or Rottie are the top dogs that attack/bite people when it's not the case.  You'll always hear about the pit bull that mauled someone but you'll never see the story about the 6 month old baby that was mauled to death by the family Pomeranian dog.  The fact is, since 1975, fatal dog attacks in this country have been attributed to over 30 different breeds.

It's not the dog, it's the owner.

You're blinded by your affection for your pets.  Some breeds have always been known to have dangerous temperments.  Yes there are exceptions, but behaviors usually breed true.

My favorite example - my neighbors bought a little sheep dog (looked like a small collie) for their kid.  They got the dog as a very small pup so it had zero training, and it had never ever seen any livestock or seen any working dog in it's life.  But the temperment bred true...  That fool dog would literally run her feet bloody running circles around the neighbor's boy.  If the kid was in the pool, the dog would run laps around the pool until there was a trail of little bloody pawprints circling the pool deck.  If the family was at home, the dog would bark herself hoarse at anything that came within 50 ft of the fence.  If the family was away, the dog would sit very sadly under the patio cover, permitting me to care for her and feed her, but when the family came home I was just another wolf trying to get at her flock of sheep.

Don't try to spread any nonsense about how it's the owner not the dog.  While there are of course exceptions, behavior and temperment breeds true and certain mixes are especially likely to have extreme behaviors.  Breed a bit of wolf into just about anything, and sit back to watch the fun...

Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.
