Skuzzy ping question
« on: February 06, 2009, 01:05:35 AM »
Whats the difference between the net stat ping in game and standard command line pings? My ISP's got some funkiness going on both with AH and other overseas game servers (eg BF2). Ping in command prompt looks OK, usually 183ms. In game it jumps all over like an epiletic LA pilot, from 212 to 697ms.

Same happens with BF2 servers in Aussie, cmd prompt 65ms, in game 120-200ms.

It's not software hardware, tested with different pc, router, switch etc.

I isolated to the ISPs upstream provider by VPN tunneling into work and routing out via there and things are PERFECT (203ms constant to AH servers no jumping all over).

So I figure the upstream (asianet) is passing standard icmp through fine and playing silly buggers with app traffic. So I wondered how your ingame ping is different?

In game ping uses UDP to simulate game network conditions.
