When was the last time you backed up your music library? You should be able to go in there and get it (If you have backed it up of course :))

Here is something else you can look into...

when you put songs in itunes, it makes a copy of the songs in an "itunes" folder located in your "my music" folder

If you have XP, go to Start > My Music > iTunes > iTunes Music.

If your songs have not been deleted off your computer, they would be in this "iTunes Music" folder.
The files should have the Title of the Artist. Inside that, The title of the album, then the song.m4p/.m4a inside that.

If they are still there, open up iTunes and go to File > Import.  Open up the Artist and album you want, select the song, and hit import. The song should now be back into your itunes library.

I tried putting the backup in play, but the file is only 63kb. Normally it would be well over that, so I know that there are no songs in the backup.

Problem with that is, only about 1/4 of all my songs are in the itunes Music folder.

the price, ease of use and storage size is very competitive.
Price?  Maybe, you do have to pay Apple's premium.  Ease of use?  Yes and no, their DRM garbage is a big turn off for me.  Storage size for hard drive based one are good.  For their flash based models....not so much.
Creative and Samsung make fine products as well.
