Carrier Groups and AI
« on: January 12, 2001, 11:58:00 AM »
Statement:  Remove all AI from the carrier groups.

Con:  cv's will be defenseless without AI
Pro:  gun positions on cv's are player-mannable

Con:  nobody wants to man cv guns
Pro:  I do, and I think others would also.  AH player base is growing, and not every new player is going to be a flight sim fanatic.

Con:  This is Aces High, not Gunners Low
Pro:  imho AH is already currently more than just a flight sim, and with the ground vehicles we have and the recent 1.05 changes, it's clear that HTC wants to offer more than just a flight sim.  There will always be people who want to fly; eventually, I think there will be people who want to do other things than fly.  Also, people currently pop up in M16s, Flaks, and Panzers when a field is under attack; there may be people who will pop up in gunners.

Con:  NOE raids could show up undetected and slaughter a cv before anyone realized it was happening (since there would be no AI defenses).  This is about the best CON that I can come up with and the only real reason I can see this never happening (no AI on cv's).  Although, I'm really not sure that this would happen real often, since there is usually a lot of people around a cv who  would spot an incomming raid.
Pro:  Maybe a host message could be transmitted on the country channel warning that a cv was in danger (this would simulate lookouts); perhaps this message would be triggered at the same time that the AI defenses are currently triggered.

<need some help with more cons>

Pro: no more uber-acks

Pro: when you are being shot by ack or flak guns, you know a human is doing it.  Just like you know a human is flying that plane over there, or driving that vehicle down there.

Pro:  people will get involved with protecting assets even more, without relying on AI.

I know it will probably never happen, but I think it would be kinda nice to try out for a little while.  You never know what will really happen unless you try it.

edit: p.s. forgot to add, I'd like to hear people tell me why this is such a bad idea, as long as you don't make me cry (i.e. flame too much) lol

In regards to AI. How about a little 1/2 and 1/2?  If no one is manning the guns on the CV's let the AI do it's job. Although the AI right now needs some work IMO.
Then for every human gunner that mans a station on a ship, one or two (depends on how many AI guns per ship there are) AI guns shut down?

I like that idea westy, how about for every player manning guns it takes away 1/4 of the AI help, so if you had 4 players manning guns the AI would be off, I know it dont sound like much but its hard getting into the fleet with 1 human gunner on 5" that know what he' doing, much less 4.

good idea westy. 1/2 the guns be AI, 1/2 be mannable. Same in fields and in carriers.

Uh, I think that is just what we have now. Players can only control 2 of the 5 inch guns on the cv and 4 of the smaller ones. There are more on the boat. Same for the cruiser too.

For what it's worth I like the combo idea.

Maybe it would be a little more painless to remove half the current AI at the cv instead of all AI.

That way, only half the guns are AI and the rest are player-manned.  So, if nobody is manning the guns, the fleet has at least a little bit of AI defense.

I think have all of them be IA when no one is in them. There would be coverage (that at the moment needs a little work on it's accuracy  ) when no one is around. You could even do the guns at the airfields that way.

I think human gunners do not effect the number of AI gunners at all.  Human gunners combined with AI is just a tad too powerful imo.
