Printers- all in one machines
« on: February 08, 2009, 11:44:50 PM »
My wife is going to need a quality all in one machine (printer, fax, flatbed/glass top scanner) for her new job so he can be at home more often. Can anyone recommend one from experience or good word of mouth?

In the past I had one, but it was the biggest piece of fecal matter and it still sits in my attic collecting dust.

1. Print speed doesn't matter

2. Color printer and color fax is necessary.

3. Budget is around $300.

4. Wireless would be a plus, but I can always run it to the router.

The HPs are pretty nice. I have two 1610's and havent had a problem with either of them.
My daughter gets PLENTY of use out of my wifes printing all kinds of crap. The wife prints out photos and I use mine primarily to print out proposals and invoices.

I would recommend HP Color LaserJet CM1312nfi MFP if you dont need to print high quality photos. (laser is not good for it)

And if you need a photo printer, check Epson products. For example Stylus Photo PX800FW. Wlan included...

Heya Del,
I have used Lexmark for my home office after many crash and burns with HP and Canon........

my current 5/6+ year old Lexmark X7170 does it all, Stand alone fax/color fax, stand alone copy/color copy, Big Flat Color scanner, as well as full computer use and network style server printer........

the best thing is I print  multiple contracts, legal size documents, and other sizes and from my experience with the HP, Canon, Epson in my past years the Lexmark in my opinion wins out for Ink Cartridge lasting longer both color and Black.... ( compared to using both Laserjet & ink jet HP printers at the work office, now our Minkolta $25 grand Print server at work is another story..that thing is out of this world can print 24" x 36" ( just can't get it to fit in my Truck to take home LOL ))

it gives you a photo color option if needed can plug in USB, has pictbridge option also......

this is an older model, but the newer models like it seem to be just as good.......

the best thing to remember about printers is , think of it the same as your PC case, it will collect dust in most every crevice, so if you keep it cleaned /dusted often then it will last a very long time.....

hope this helps.......

In the cheap $150 range, I've only experienced Canon and Xerox all-in-one's.  I can't recall any model numbers but they're within 2 years old.  The Xerox was my mother-in-law's and went she upgraded to Vista, it was a driver nightmare.  Otherwise it seemed to print fine etc, though ink was more expensive than normal IIRC.  The Canon was my father's and he doesn't use it hardly ever so I can't say much about it, though it's assembly instructions were crazy stupid.

My last job we had a higher end HP model that seemed pretty good, though it would sometimes cut off parts of faxes if you used the top roll feeder (an occasional jam as well).  So I always used the glass.  Ink Jet wise, I've mainly dealt with photo high end photo printers (the HP Business Jet 2800's).  When those printer were working, they were excellent.  When they weren't, they were such a pain in the butt.  Any type of heavier use (say maybe 20-30 prints a day with varying quality) would cause a great deal of jams or misprints.  And that was if the print drivers decided to work that day.

I have the Dell All-in-One 924, got it a little over 2 years ago and never had any troubles with it, so as far as my experience goes Dell All-in-One Photo center has been great.

The problem I have seen with Dell is the price of their ink cartridges. They are astronomical.

Just got the low ink alert when I printed something out yesterday.  Standard capacity black is $23.99, high capacity is $29.99, standard capacity color is $26.99, high capacity is $38.99.

That's not atrocious. When Dell was giving away free printers I looked up the cost of the ink cartridges and it was like $60 bucks. If you look at HP they make 1/3 of their sales off ink sales.

If you don't need color, there a plenty of little laser printers out there.  Samsung makes some real cheap ones.  I saw a deal from OfficeDepot the other day for the ML-2510 for $50.  Not sure how good it is though.  I did have a Samsun in college and it worked great until the rollers stopped gripping the paper (very annoying).

Right now I have a Brother HL-2070N that I paid $90 on sale at Newegg (free s/h).  Other than curling the paper a little, its a dynamo machine.  Much faster than the old Samsung.  With a ethernet port its cake to set it up as a network printer so my wife doesn't need to have her computer on to print to it etc.  Brother makes a similar model with a wireless adapter which I've seen on sale for about the same price.

If you just do a lot of text, laser is probably the best you can do because it can print a lot and the cost per page is much lower than ink jet.  On my Samsung, in 3 years, I replaced the toner once.  Though I was in college at the time and occasionally did print quite a bit, it was no home business quantity.  The first toners are generally starter toners that can get you about 1500-2000 pages.  I'm still on my Brother's original starter toner after 2 years.
