Community Service Reminder
« on: February 15, 2009, 10:03:31 AM »
OK hopefully now that I have your attention he he, I took the computer apart this morning and gave it a thorough cleaning.  I have a multi fan Antec 900 gamers case, a dog and a cat. Man alive can it pull the dust and hair in.  Also noticed that when I built it I must have been in a hurry to use it because the cable management was horrible.

So if I may have saved even one poor soul a meltdown because he hasn't done his maintenance lately.  My job is complete.

Message over

Carry on

Part two while I was at it,

Checked for updates and ran AVG, Malwarebytes, CC Cleaner, PurgeIE, Spybot S&D then defraged all drives. Not in that order but you get the point.

Now I'm done.

Do you smoke? Tar from cigarette smoke will cause those things to stick.

I try and do a dust cleaning on the main fans every couple months at least.  At least every couple weeks for the side intake fan as cat hair is always present on it.  The front intake is a pain to get at, so thats 6-12 months before I get to it.  I'm usually in there changing some configuration around in my computer either way.  Generally if the 2 x 30mm fans I have on my NB begin to growl, I have to open the case up and give those bearings a little oil.

Good going, like I said if I can get one person to check and save a meldown I'm happy.  I don't usually go by specific intervals but when I do it I do the whole enchilada, besides plugging up the fins on the heatsink, the dust sticks to the blades of the fans and I allways thought that that's what not only decreases the airflow but throws the blades out of balance killing the bearings.

I pulled my old desktop totally apart Friday and cleaned it all up including pulling the top off the PSU to get to the fan inside.  It was the first time in the 10 years I've owned it.  It was gross in places and yes I smoke, especially while playing AH (plenty of time waiting to get to the fight).

I was hoping to get rid of a groaning noise that it's been making for about 5 years on boot-up.  I didn't but I now know it's my PSU fan.  I've got a spare 80mm case fan in the closet that I might try to replace it with tomorrow.  Fortunately it's the right size.  I'm hoping that I can just slip two of it's pins over the two pin connector in the PSU (and that it won't melt :) ).
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

Try cutting a piece of your wifes pantyhose, and
tapeing it over the air intakes.. Leave it limp, no
stretching, it grabs cathair like a magnet...

Maybe the ones you RIPPED off her on valentines day, LOL :devil

I've found PSU's with a plug (custom) for the 80mm fan, others have the wires directly soldered to a circuit board.  A soldering iron fixes all.  I've saved a few old comps by doing this.
