Effective range of Torpedoes?
« on: December 26, 2000, 08:35:00 PM »
Whats the max run distance?
Speed? Time to Target at max distance?

How fast are the ships moveing? Est lead distance required?

In case you can't tell I'm stuck at grandma's house & can't fly till Fri. So enlighten us poor guys who are counting the minutes till it's our turn.

Effective range of Torpedoes?

Fleets look like they're moving at 30 knots. PT boat takes a day or three to catch up to them. Torpedo speeds look right, one torp to a DE sinks it. Hit the carrier by accident offline (protected structures off) and it kept going. Checked torp speed against www.warships1.com  reference. It looks right, but doesn't feel right. Standard torpedo was the US Mk 15, with a speed of 45 knots and a 6,000 yard range. Funny part is, I can outrun them in a PT-boat doing about 50mph. 45 knots comes out to 49.5mph. Not slowly gaining distance, but rapidly gaining distance. Possible bug, I don't know.

Bugs are rampant, FR's are going all over the place. I'd suggest waiting for patch 1 before dloading it.

I believe both the TBM and the PT are using Mk 13 torpedos.

I believe the PT boat thats modeled is the 80' Elco which carried 4 MK XIII torpedoes as Jig stated.  Max speed of the Elco was about 45 kts while the speed of the torp maxed out at 33.5 kts.

Although speeds of fleets arent impossible, I dont think they were launching and landing planes at that speed were they?  Wasnt launch and recovery done at 20kts into the wind?  Just being picky

A 20knt fleet would make gunnery a little easier also. It would also be easyer to hit. On the over all it's ok as it is though.

Ok here is a little test,
Pulled behind the carrier about 500m behind it, launched a torp...waited...waited...wait edIt took 4 miniutes for the torp to catch the carrier from 500m behind it, accurate or not thats kinda ridiculus.

Then don't do it, Wobble.

I drop from dead ahead.  I sank a cruiser last night doing that.

Hans, the point is that either the fleet is moving too fast or the torps are moving too slow.

no one ever fired head on if they could help it...less target for one thing and easy to outurn for another.
i think the fleet does seem a tad fast but if you lead your torpedo shots they hit.
just practice a few shots changing lead each time and you'll get it.
I think its fine as it is myself for gameplay but if unrealistic i vote for change.

Torps run at 38 Mph.  The CV is faster, but not my much.  Say 40 - 45.

Yep. Essex-class carrier and Baltimore-class cruiser had a top speed of 33 knots (36.3mph). If the fleet was running 40 or 45 you couldn't expect a stern-shot to hit. Right now the fleet is moving at 36.3 mph; top speed.

I'd like to see it slowed down a tad, maybe give players control over speed. 688(i) Hunter/Killer was a simple sub sim, but throttle control was easy enough. Either hit the EOT (engine order telegraph) or click the numbers. Left-click and they go up, right-click and they go down.

Must be hard work for maintenance crew when they run engines on maximum power for all day long.
I guess it would need quite many spare parts as well in the harbors...
