F4U fuel burn
« on: January 06, 2000, 07:48:00 AM »

The Hawg seems to be burning fuel much faster these days.  It's the worst climber in the game right now, but at least before .44 I had lots of gas to spend time climbing with.

Does anybody know how it should be on gas?  It was second only to the pony before, but something seems to have changed with fuel consumption.  Maybe they are all the same at the moment?

You should try climbing with Fw190

Now now Fishu, be nice

Do you have numbers for the Fw190A-8 climbrate? The only figures I have are almost equal to the AH performance, except for top speed of course. As for the drop tank - why does the plane roll left when you drop it? Hmmmm...

I find the take off (right wing dip) and tank drop behavior to be better in .44? Am I imagining things..
I was amazed last night how soon the F4U goes through half a tank of gas. I was also amazed that with my tank going empty over F4 at about 10k I was able to glide to within walking distance of F8. If I had had 11k I would have landed it.

Juzz,

It is either that P-51 climbs too fast or Fw190 climbs too slow

I have seen numbers of 3600fpm with 190A8, 4x20mm version, but I haven't achieved to do such things with sufficient fuel, maybe 25% after little flight helps..
2x20mm version climbs better, 3600fpm with WEP and 25% fuel, but it seems still be off.

Also it seems like drop tank weights less than 2x20mm outboard cannons, ive noticed that 4x20mm 190 climbs way slower than 2x20mm (those guns seems to weight +650lb, or so, if drop tank weights about same)

With fuel multiplier, I see stangs climbs +3000fpm without WEP all time and myself I just stuck to somewhere 2500fpm max in 190 (without some super dives)
If I climb more, it means I have barely enough fuel for couple mile flight

When I flew F4u, I didn't really have problems climbing, did climb like dream after I had flown Fw190 for somewhile.

Juzz,

When dropping the DT, check six and you will see the tank fly off from the right wing.

Fats,

looks like my guess for the weight of guns has been quite right... looks like these guns in AH weights too much.

The fuel burn rate on the Corsair is really high at full power.  We'll be implementing the correct fuel consumption at cruise settings soon.

I just checked the gondolas.  Fats and I have been reading the same references.  While the gondola weight it correct, it turned out I didn't have the ammo weight set.  I'll add in the ammo weight in the next version.

Once Pyro gets it fined tuned, here is about what you should expect in fuel consumption & Climbrate from a F4U-1. Yes we have the F4U-1D, but it should be very similar, with only the WEP numbers significantly different (if any)due to its added water injection.

These numbers come directly from the F4U Pilots manual.  I tried to scan the original chart, but it was unreadable, so I made a chart in a spreadsheet for you. The Manual covers all of the -1 corsairs, the -1,-1A,-1D, and the British models, but the performance charts are for the -1.

Additionally from a different chart (11,700 lb takeoff weight)
Altitude-----BEST IAS-----FT MIN ROC-----Time from SL------Fuel from SL
SL to 5000 --- 135 ------- 2700 --------- 2 mins ------------- 18 gallons
To 10,000 ft -- 135 ------ 2700 --------- 4 mins ------------- 28 gallons
To 15,000 ft -- 130 ------ 2600 --------- 6 mins ------------- 36 gallons
To 20,000 ft -- 130 ------ 1900 --------- 8 mins ------------- 45 gallons
To 25,000 ft -- 125 ------ 1500 --------- 11 mins ------------- 55 gallons
To 30,000 ft -- 120 ------- 500 --------- 19 mins ------------- 79 gallons

Fuel Capacity F4U-1D
Internal Main Tank 237 gallons (includes the 50 gallon reserve)
Optional Centerline Drop Tank 170 gallons
x2 Optional Navy Drop Tanks (wing) 154 gallons each (308 gallons total)
x2 Optional Lockheed Drop Tanks (wing) 170 gallons each (340 gallons total)

Ok so there is all the data you need to run fuel consumption tests in AH, so just get a stopwatch, climb to altitude (subtract that fuel from total), then make a powersetting and check the time. Its simple from there.

OH !! And don't forget our x2.5 fuel consumption multiplier.

PS: You also now have the correct Manifold pressure numbers and RPM settings, to get your best fuel mileage out of the F4U.

Enjoy
