My guns are set at 275 or 300..i think that's good.I might just have to stop shooting at planes to far away.

I think this is the root of your problem, especially looking at your hit percentage.  You're taking desperation shots too far away.  Get closer before you shoot.

I used to to the same thing until I started flying Yaks.  No spare ammo to spray at targets.  I also seem to manage to hit wingtips quite often.  That'll get you an assist right there.

My Kills/Assist ratio seems to hang around 7:1 and I fly everything.  I've got my convergences set fom 400-650 (mostly 650) depending on the plane and am usually somewhere over 10% hit rate.

I do tend to ping guys up then let them go in active areas.

I have my 50 cals set out to around 400 but this probably isn't the problem.  Try a little harder to steady your guns when you fire and get concentrated bursts in.  For example, if you are tracking a guy in a flat turn, it is important to minimize the vertical sway in your gun sight when you are firing.  It has to be steady, when you fire with a steady sight and connect you will see concentrated sprites and it is much more likely to be lethal.  If you scatter your hits all around the plane, you could potentially hit him over 20 times and not take him down and only muster out an assist.  The key to Kills over Assists is engaging and disposing of the enemy on your first pass.

Zazen posted an excellent thread on this very subject. I wish I could remember every thing he said. basically staggering your machine guns starting at either 600 or 550 and move them in by 50 for each gun. The reason is that most of the time you are closing in on the enemy and it gives the guns a chance to hit the same spot on the con. Hope I have that right.

I don't fire on someone randomly anymore, if I fire I intend to kill.  My assist to kills went down, to what level I don't know as I don't really check the stats.

Kinda useless when you spend 50% of your time trying to stop the vulchers and take missions that are usually hopeless.

It's all about the fun ya know.  But yea I hear you - I can't tell you how many times I spray with my ki84 cannon rounds only to have the same effect with the small guns.  Doesn't make sense but I dig that plane so.

I really don't think they have many of the weapons modeled properly at all.  I've played other games were there are differences in what you see/feel just changing speeds on different planes with the same weapons.

I do notice that if you drive hard on someone with 50cals they are far more effective in this game for some reason...

I too have messed with calibration to nausea - I'm set around 350-400 personally.

Personally, my aimpoint is 400yds..
So my convergences are 375, 400, 425...
This is a compromise that lengthens my field of fire
to get more hits, but will give me a decent concentration
if I keep my aim steady...

most planes fuel tanks are in the wings, which means the wing was already weak with the 75% damage needed for it to part. Your shot gave it the other 25% so the wing came off and the other guy....who did a higher percentage of damage... got the kill. The percent numbers used are a guess, but you get the idea.

Learn to get close, and learn to concentrate your fire on a single spot. I'm just starting to get my hit percent to stay over 5, and my numbers of assists is starting to drop. Aim is more important than being able to fly. You can be an average flyer, but with a great aim everything dies, but being the best flyer in the game won't help you if you can't hit the broad side of a barn.... even if they did let them barns fly!

I use these convergences and rarely do I shoot beyond 400....unless it's a sitter.  All guns set to same spot is better than over lapping i.e some at 275 mixed with 300.

Check the nose bounce of your stick and if it's too up n down add some damper to the "Y" axis.

yep i don't overlap ,and my nose bounce is not bad ...i have a good stick
, but being the best flyer in the game won't help you if you can't hit the broad side of a barn.... even if they did let them barns fly!
that's some of my problem ,i can out fly a lot of sticks on the game ...its just the shooting that is not my strength.

I'm sitting with my converegence set at 275, and seldom try for a real kill-shot beyond D200.  I may try to "steer" my opponent with a few sprinklers beyond that though.  I'd say the majority of my kills occur on the first instance I pull the trigger, rather than several firing passes later.

F4U with .50's (of course)

I'm basically running at a 9.9/1 Kill to assist ratio if you average my last 6 months.

I'd recommend making sure you're close enough, firing at convergence, and able to land a sustained burst on the bad guy.

I also will almost always simply fly past/ignore a bad guy that has been or is in a fight.  If he turns for me, or if I get asked to help then I'll shoot him, but I'm normally looking for a "fresh" plane to fight.  If I end up attacking an enemy after he's fought, it's almost invariably after the friendly dies, so any damage he's racked up won't count against me anyway.  I often suspect I'll get an assist before I actually see the message if I'm violating that pattern.

As a result, 99% of assists for me come as a result of not killing the guy on my first pass, and someone else cleaning him up for me.  Getting close, firiing at convergence, and landing a sustained burst on a plane eliminates that for the most part.  If the guy you shoot explodes, you're kill can't be "stolen" either...

I always have a ton of assists. I guess its because of all the wierd snapshots i take with the mg's in my g14 and when i run out of those 30mms i just go around pinging lots of folks without getting the killshot.

I dont mind though. The fun is in the fight not always the kill  :)
