Deactivate...
« on: February 24, 2009, 09:34:37 AM »
Dear HTC,

For the good of the community please consider deactivating channel 200 as it would definitely limit some of the strife we see in game and on the BBS.

Sincerely,

Hello Vudak,

I know how to deactivate for myself.  The wish still stands.

Have a great day,

If you know how to deactivate it for yourself, why do you want to deactivate it for everyone?  Seems to me that the "good community" would already have 200 de-tuned anyway.  Or, like me, just read it for what it is and ignore it.

My thought was that some of those who always bring up improving gameplay and MA behavior would be quick to jump on this bandwagon.  I do not tune, but most references to 200 on the boards most definitely show a detrimental effect on behavior in the MA's.  Can anyone honestly say that it is more of a benefit than a detraction to the community?

I honestly believe it has more benefit than detriment.  I'm also glad it's a free-choice option and not an obligatory setting as it once was.

Hello Vudak,

I am playing Devil's Advocate a bit...In what way is it beneficial to the community?  I concur on the free choice by the way, but I wonder if that is a good or a bad thing for the community.

I'm not trying to be short here (just short on time), but basically:

1.  Makes it easier to talk to people on other country (I'm an optimist and see this as a good thing);

2.  Makes it easier for guys to talk about their fights (again, I think this is a good thing, or at least could be given the right people);

3.  Helps foster community spirit of a fun sports league and not wartime spirit of hostile countries at war (which I think is also a good thing).

There's jerks and negatives of course, but I try to focus on the bright situations.

I'm sure someone will be here shortly to expand on what I've mentioned.

I agree with vudak, but will add that all the stupidity and "drama" is also very entertaining.  I rarely participate in it, but it is funny following it  :lol

Yes.  Pretty much any time I log into one of the LW's I meet and greet old friends over 200.  It's a cross country channel where anyone can detune if they don't like the content just like the other 98 cross country channels, and it is also a channel can be moderated.

Thank you Gentlemen for responding.  I have been in the Aces High community long enough that I too have begun developing friends on all three sides of the border.  I am happy that it is moderated, as like others I have a 4 year old that likes to look over daddy's shoulder to see the game. These two things are of great importance to the community's health.

What I have not heard anyone mention or touch on the nonconstructive conversations that occur on 200(trash-talking, name calling, accusations, etc.).  I think it is an unhealthy aspect of this communication ability.  Especially when it involves newer players to the game, or those who can't seem to keep themselves in control.  Can anyone give some insight on this and how they feel about 200's use in this manner?

Have a great day,

The tools are there for this community to police itself.

If you fail to set a good example, or use those tools, or ostracize those who abuse 200, then you are stuck with the result. HTC can't do it all, this community needs to do its share as well.

"Smack talk" has long been tolerated provided its kept below a certain level.
I'm not so sure with hindsight, that it should have been.

I consider channel 200 sorta like gun control.

I don't tune it.. much like I don't own a gun.

However, I believe that those who wish to tune and use the channel have the right to do so. As I support the rights of others to own guns.

Some use it for good purposes.  Comraderie, friendship, playful banter, instructional, and as a glorified chat room.

Others use it for bad purposes.  Personal attacks, bigotry, hatred of all kinds.

Since a lot of such content is really subjective to the audience at hand, it is impossible to define a hard and fast set of what is and what is not allowed. The best you can come up with are 'guidelines'.. which, by definition, invites a whole culture of twits that seem to go out of their way to define where the limits of such guidelines are.  Almost like a game within a game.

If they deactivate 200, the new 200 will be 201.
