Am I paying for you to play?
« on: February 25, 2009, 10:19:30 PM »
I was trolling the scoreboard looking at some of the upper leaders and what they fly, only to find that many of the folks fly for 100+ hours already this month.

I just can't imagine how people could possibly do this being employed.

So I have to ask, how can people play that long with a job?  OR How can you afford to keep playing without a job?

I know times are tough out there, but I gotta tell you - I'm BURNING UP each day when I travel to work everyday and see 80% of the people in cars looking like they are going shopping or piddling around.  You know the ones, you can tell they aren't in 'going to work' mode.

There has been an obvious shift in the type of traffic I encounter in the morning since the economy hit the crapper.  Why aren't people saving and staying off the road?

Personally, I'm sick of paying 40% of my wages to those that do nothing all day.  HOWEVER I am more than happy to help those that can't.  Young or old.

Here is a great example.  My neighbor states he had a stroke and can't work.  Yet although he's twice my age he seems 40times more capable than me.  We were both shoveling our driveways, he finished in half the time.  I had to rest twice.  Do we really need to continue to pay for people like this?  I'm starting to get health issues and hope I can ALWAYS continue to work.  I can't imagine how people are happy just sitting around on their butts all the time when they are capable of getting out there and doing something with their lives.

Dunno - maybe it's just me. sigh.

Where do you live, Sincraft?

I'm not up to 100 hours, yet  ;)  but I hear your complaint.  I was working full time for years but recently moved thousands of miles so my wife could get a phd.  Now we have a $600/month mortgage payment (fixed rate) and I work part-time (she has a fellowship).  It's a nice change for a while and all the extra stick-time has improved my flying. :D

No different here for the lowlife scumbags that want free handout money from the BCMW for propane gas. ( I work for a propane company)

--- They have no job but clearly capable for work.

--- They have no money, but somehow they have enough to smoke, drink beer, watch their satellite tv, talk on their cell phone, and have a $20,000 vehicle sitting in their driveway

--- And while the gas is being delivered, they have the windows and doors opened up and the screens put in them for the fresh air. NOTE - The temperature outside isnt even 50 yet and they complain they are cold and out of gas. (Their windows work BTW. They just know how to abuse the system and get away with it)

Cant tell BCMW about it because they dont care at all.

When the weather gets warmer and ground becomes solid, its going to be time to collect some tanks back

I haven't checked my hours this last tour, but I imagine they are pretty high.

My work is seasonal (commercial fishing). It's essentially the off season for the next few months. I live in a tiny bellybutton fishing town with no girls and nothing else to do, not even a sheep. So I've been on here quite a bit.

You should be happy people are spending money, even if they don't look like they can. When people go out and shop, it helps the economy. Unfortunately what is good for people is bad for the economy. So saving money is good for you and your family, but it is bad for the economy because it is removed from circulation. (I am by no means saying go out and spend your life savings... I am saving as well).

Sounds like Keynes verbatim, not my favorite economist.  People need to spend money to help the economy like an alcoholic needs one last drink before he goes sober.

Well... unless you use your credit cards and borrow to spend.

I wish more people would do like me and spend their money AFTER they make it and not a month or more before they earn it. A nest egg... even a small one can get you out of trouble if you hit a bump in the road. Having enough money in the bank to pay all bills and pay for all your shopping for a minimum of 3 months down the road is a bare minimum of what you should have. Too many live on the edge and even a month or two without a job can send you spiraling out of control.

If people would think like that our economy might not be in the pooper.

If people would think like that our economy might not be in the pooper.

I blame those parents who do not teach their kids from an early age that if they want something they _must_ save for it.

I also blame credit card companies that gives you so many benefits if you use them and interst free borrowing _if_ you pay your bill on time. Well maybe not really their fault, but maybe the industry should be regulated more.

Using credit cards has become a natural way of life when most people in reality should never get or atleast USE anything but debet cards.

Without credit cards the spending would be about the same because your income is the same, but you would spend the money a month or two after you make it and not before. Point is that you would not be in cc debt when/if you lose your job or other unexpected things happens to you. If you dont have any cc bills to worry about then beeing able to handle your mortage with or without help is that much easyer.
