I was thinking of how to encourage the use of recon planes, once they're implemented in the game.  

HTC has mentioned artillery as an upcoming feature. What if only a recon plane could request an artillery strike to a specific target?  

If the artillery strike is made powerful enough, recon planes would surely be in an essential role in base captures and industrial strike missions.

You don't need a "recon" plane for calling in artillery strikes; you need a dedicated army co-operation plane eg: Fw 189A.

Good idea Juzz...That FW looks alot more interesting to fly than its american counter part- the lowly L4 (military version of the Piper Cub)

The 189 was armed and was used to support ground troops in addition to the recon role.

I would like the Fieseler Fi 156 Storch

It could take off in 71 yards (65m)
Land in 22 yards (20m)
Virtually hover in a 25 mph head wind without any loss of control.

BTW max speed 109mph...

What I'd like to see is Fieseler Storches and L-4's being able to operate from vehicle bases, on a smooth area designated as a "grass" runway.  I'd love to see artillery commandable from these planes, and they'd be a blast to fly, since they would be more maneuverable than any of the fighters, and slow enough to linger over the target for accurate spotting.  I know, some will say "Why introduce these slow planes when a Spit will do the same job."  Well if you think about it, a B17 could take the roll of all the planes in the game, but what would be the point?  Load it up with paratroopers and make them jump out the door.  If you do it carefully, you can dogfight with B17's, and there's guns and ammo to spare.  B17's can bomb better than most jabos with their Super-Nordens.  B17's can be used as gunships against tanks, and make good "CAP" at airfields that are still open.  You get the point.  Sure a current plane can do the artillery thing, but I'd love to see a plane or two in the game made specifically for the purpose.

Well said Mark - I agree 100%.

Here's one more suggestion for how to order artillery strikes:  You would have a set amount of "fire commands" each sortie, for example 4.  You would have 2 kinds of fire commands:

The first command type you would use to designate a target and order the initial arty strike.  The second command type is used to correct the fire if it was off target.  And the first strike usually is.  

The first command type would include the coordinates of the target and the amount of your limited strikes you want to use, "salvo": (.arty 10,9,5,1 2)

The accuracy of the initial strike would depend on the accuracy of the coordinates you gave.  How close you are to the given target should also affect this. This would eliminate giving fire commands when you're 100miles from the target.  

Fire correction commands could be simple directions where to move the fire (degrees) and how much (yards): (.arty 98 500).

The accuracy of the correction would depend again on the range from the target, but also on the time elapsed from the initial fire command.  This would encourage quick fire correction.

You could decide how to use your 4 commands - all on different targets (.arty) or all on one target, with up to 3 fire corrections.

I've had that picture on my desktop for months  

A storch could also be used as an air-ambulance, with the capability of rescuing downed airmen or tank drivers whose tanks have become disabled. It's superb short-field performance should let it be available from vehicle bases, and let it land in very rugged places.  It had a single rear-firing 7.9mm gun, so at least it could annoy any attacking fighters, but then again it's maneuverability should make it tough to attack if flown right.
