N00b Memoirs
« on: February 26, 2009, 11:12:27 AM »
I was thinking last night off my 1st impression of the game when I started playing in 2003.  I had a numbers gameID and I upped a B-17 with 100% fuel.  I climbed, climbed, climbed until I got to 20,000 ft.  I finally found a small base to bomb and I made the greatest impact on my 1st bomb run ever.

I bombed the runway!!

I was told on channel 200 that it's the hangers I need to bomb and not the runway.  :frown:

I said that I did not know that and that I was new to the game and they LOL'd on 200 and said welcome to the game.  Needless to say the flight back was long and I lost 2 drones for turning too tight.  :lol

I like to hear from some of you UBER sticks anything funny that happened to you as a N00b.  Something for the newbies to look up to.  Come on........a little laugh aint bad boys.

-I thought I was awsome with my Spit 9 k/d after only playing for a couple months.  (No, I never HO'ed)  Then I realized I was flying a spit 9.

-The first time I flew with my squaddies in the DA, (maybe three months into the game) they were toying with me ruthlessly.  I came screaming down on MVJester in my Yak, all happy that I was about to bounce his low, slow P-40.  I'm doing probably 450-500 (just a guess--don't really recall) and he chops throttle, pops flaps, and cranks back into a hard, steep climb.  I try to follow, only to rip both wings clean off and instantly turn into a flying hot dog.   :O

-One of my first sorties, I was cruising about in my 38, looking for a fight.  I see an enemy right on the deck, turning about while being chased by 4 friendlies.  I think "hmmm they can't seem to kill him, I'll go down and lend my services!" (makes me sick nowadays, lol)  Anyway, I dive in to save my poorly aiming friends from wasting all their ammo on a stick stirring 190, and cut RIGHT through all of their lines of fire to drop in on his six.  I hear two explosions, as killshooter drops 2 of my esteemed colleauges...   :lol

Ahhh, to be a n00b again...

I actually kept a bit of a log when I first started playing (Aces High that is)...  Here's a few choice selections:

June 4, 2004:

Also, gunnery is very difficult.  Though I’ve managed to score a few kills on stationary targets such as ack, I can’t score more then a few glancing blows on a full sized bomber, much less a nimble fighter.

On the other hand, there is one thing I can do: dive bomb.  Now, I’m not saying that I can hit anything yet, but at least I can drop the bomb.  Once I figure out how to turn on a dive-bombing sight, I’ll do much better.  At the very least, if I dive straight down from 10,000 feet in a Mustang, I have a decent shot of nailing a large hanger, and that will help my country out a bit.

June 9, 2004:

Quote
My accuracy has improved somewhat, although I’m still in the “spray and pray” mode.  The most kills I can acquire are two in a mission.  After that, I’m simply out of ammo.  At least I can now kill two in a mission, and have landed a good amount of those missions.  I have a feeling that when my accuracy improves to say, twenty-five percent --  :rofl :lol :rofl --, I’ll be able to kill many more.  As it is, my accuracy is a horrid two-percent.

June 10, 2004:

On thing I’ve learned from AH is that if you’re going up against a mass of aircraft, you’d better be sure to stay near your own group of buddies.  Once you get separated, or even if you are on the outskirts of the group, you’re in big, big trouble.  I learned that one the hard way last night.

August 4, 2004:

Taking all these factors into account, I decided to take up a FW190-D9, as I figured it would at least give me a chance of outrunning some bad guys.

These are kind of an eye-opener

Not an uber stick here by any stretch but I do have a story to contribute. When I first started this game, I was recruited by the Wolfpack, Skywolf was our CO. They took me under their wing and tried to teach me the game.
We took off on an attack mission, F6Fs, max load out for a 1.5 sector flight to hit a Vbase.
Just inside the dar ring for the vbase, young T finds one of those 'out in the middle of nowhere, radar looking stations (my assignment was to hit the radar) I proceed to give it hell, bombs, rockets, 50 cals, bricks, rocks, everything, thinking I'm helping the squad get in unnoticed. At some point I hear 'someone needs to kill the radar' then Skywolf asks on squad 'T where are you' my reply was 'killing the dar but it won't go down, Ive hit it with everything and am bingo ammo but it won't go down!!!!! LOL. We were all new once guys, SERaider, thank you for starting this post, it's a fun one and I'm sure the stories will be good  <S> Red dots.

Back in the Air Warrior days when the Relax Realism arenas were the most used, me and class mate logged to the Full Realism arenas... since we couldn't fight worth a damn on full realism, we went for a bombing run in an A-26. They were only 4 guys on the whole arena and immediately started to complain that the arena was for fighting only. Anyhow, with Spyhawk as my gunner, we made a bomb run on an uncapped field then RTB'ed in a hurry as all four of those guys upped and started to chase us...

All this while, I am beating my wings as fast as I can on the deck... and Spyhawk is tonting them over the open channel about being untouchable. I can't remember what was said, but I remember that right when he made the most outrageous comment I crashed on final... Logged after that, it was just too embarrasing. :o

Upped a Spitfire on my first sortie, and was vulched by a La-7 right away. Second sortie I did get up, but not yet understanding the icon colors yet, I killshot myself.  :rofl

My first sortie, a couple of years ago (you would think I would be better by now :cry), I was going to try to dive bomb something.  I got in the air, and there was this group of buildings right off the airfield that resembled a town.  So I climbed up to about 3k, and proceed to bomb one of the buildings.  A voice came onto my computer saying "Why are you bombing your own town?".  Scared the hell outta me.  I have since learned what towns to bomb, and that this game has vox.
Amazing you could actually recruit that much suck into one squad.

I didn't know where the autopilot controls were.  I'd get in the air in level flight and have to constantly keep trimming to fly straight.  It took me a week or two before I figured out where the auto pilot controls were.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

I didn't know what check six was. I kept hearing the (default) "CHECK SIX" over and over again. Every time it happened I would ask myself who is this guy and why does he keep following me around the map. It took about a week for me to learn it was not always the same guy but the result of someone pushing a button and an in game sound.
Haxxor has returned!!!!

Took me some time to save up the 150+ perky points I need to get that 262,,,,, but when I did, I felt like I was the top dog with it, took off and climbed up high a couple of sectors out, played with the controls a bit thinking I should not have any problems shooting someone down with this thing.....

Get Near a huge furball of Red guys and decide I will come down on one of these unsuspecting victims of mine,,, picked one out and nose down on him and was leading him for the perfect shot, and at that moment he peels out the way and I gave the usual unresponsive jerk to the stick and realize I am going full throttle nose down for the deck,  :lol  with the much embarrassing reaction of trying to throttle back, pull up, and to level off of being no use,,,, I could just hear everyone saying, yep that must have been a noob that lawn darted that 262......  :rofl

Needless to say, I didnt waste my perkies next oppurtunity I had.....    :lol

I have only been flying a year now, but my first mission went exactly as yours SEraider, except my drones made it home, though it was pure chance, I didn't have a clue they would explode at that point. The funniest thing happened just the other day though. There was a group attacking one of the ports. I decided I would fly up in between the port and the next airfield and intercept anyone going to defend it. On the way I pass a group of buffs going ashore to hit a city that was near. I am cruising around and no one is coming. Suddenly bar dar crosses from the airfield to the city sector, I am like, yeah someone is going after those buffs. I am cruising, day dreaming, scanning for an aircraft when BAM, ack right next to my canopy scares the crap out of me. I jumped 3 foot straight out of my chair. I think I had a mini heart attack on that one.
Used to fly as Halo46, GRHalo, Hobo and Punk at the end.

I didn't know how to read the map and kept upping from far off bases. I think it was my 3rd day before I finally see a low B-17 at about 5k, I'm at roughly 14k in a p38 and my adrenaline starts pumping. Mind you, this was back in the day of lone bombers with the lazer sight system. So I get all excited, set myself up on his very high 6 and start to dive on him. A few thousand feet later my I'm totally compressed and I wiz by the b17 at near mach speed and lawn dart into the ground. I see on the grey channel a big LOL@P38 pop up. I about had a heart attack at the ripe age of 22 I was so mad and shaky.
