Tank commanders wanted! -- tank war in the desert
« on: February 28, 2009, 02:05:43 AM »
The next scenario (Tunisia:  Dawn of Battle) is intended to have massive tank battles, starting at Kasserine Pass.

If you are a GV'er who has wants to see tanks play a major role in scenarios, this one is for you. Rommel's Panzerarmee vs. Montgomery's 8th Army and Patton's II Corps -- fire and maneuver in the desert.

If you have an interest, more information is here:

http://ahevents.org/pacific-theatre/current-or-next-scenario-2.html

And if it sounds like fun to you, please spread the word.

We want as many tank commanders in this one as we can get.

If you ever wanted to feel like the ground war actually meant something, this is the scenario for you.

Imagine, you have your back against the wall, the friendly tank crews on your left and right already destroyed by a large force of Panzers. You make an empassioned plea for support on the radio and a single P38G squad shows up there to assist you. Calling out targets you see the Panzers out in front of your revetment burst into flame one at a time upon the P38Gs bomb drops. After a short time the 38Gs call 'bingo' and turn towards home, wishing you the best of luck.

After saying good bye to your driver and your gunner and readying for yourselves for the ultimate demise, you begin to call out targets for your gunner. You main gun belches fire and begins to find the exact range of the nearest Panzer out in front. Suddenly, you hear tank fire to your left and your right! You have been encircled! Wait, no, you notice they are friendly tanks! Moving forward, your force begins to push the Panzer spearhead back.

--------

Fiction aside, this will mimic the best scenario run by Fencer in the past. Don't worry about being egged repeatedly, the bomb size fighters can carry have been limited by the designer.

(sorry I couldn't proof read this, I am at work and ran out of time)

edit: You will notice some of the biggest furballing twits become the most loyal escort, ground pounder, or ally in a scenario.

Sherman Fireflies & T34s against Panzer IV's and Tigers.
Both sides get M8s and M16s and M3s.

Plus, both sides have the capability to affect the ground war via Air Power.

The Allies are the underdog in this scenario, but we will fulfill our destiny.

We picked the mix of tanks based on what folks with a good amount of tank experience felt was a decent mix, given also that the allies have a bit more tanks than the axis; and we did a bit of testing tank vs. tank testing at range.  As Kermit says, it's geared toward a mix of Shermans and T-34/76's vs. a mix of Tigers and Panzers.

Also, in this scenario, tank commanders get 3 lives, and any deaths cause a 5-minute delay before the arena will let you spawn again, but deaths from air attack do not subtract from the GV'ers' available number of lives.

The T34/76 can hold its own against Panzer IVs in ambush environments.  I checked the Tunisia terrain.  It's not entirely flat, but there aren't many areas to hide and if you do hide behind a "ridge" the slope is very low so the range at which you become visible is long.  At long range the T34/76 is useless.  At any range, except a few hundred feet, the T34/76 is useless against the Tiger.

Also, while the default German skins are a big drawback in normal terrains, in Tunisia they are ideal.  The T34/76 and Sherman default skins (and any skins really) will stand out like a sore thumb... that's been painted black... on a field of white snow... with a big neon arrow pointing at it saying "Kill Me".

While I'd love to participate in the ground war part of this scenario, I fear my blood pressure would reach possibly fatal levels as I get vaporized almost instantaneously (three times, apparently) giving new meaning to the term "kill".  ;)

1)T34s have their advantage and disadvantages.  Enlist in the Allied Army for more details.

2)German skins have advantage?  Pics of Aces high German tanks in Tunisia, North Africa terrain

3)To enlist with the Allied Armed forces, you have to be in good shape, and having high blood pressure may disqualify you in your physical.  :D

Yeah, I should have checked before I posted.  The German skins are not nearly as light tan as I thought.  Makes me wonder why people whine about how they stick out on green terrains.
