Let's set the record straight SGT's made up a large part of Marine Aviation in WW2. NCO's currently are the only ones who pilot LCAC's and trust me in Wartime aviators are always pulled from the NCO ranks.

I realize that being a CAP member you essentially are a quasi-military member of what boils down to the A/V Club in High School so, your knowledge is somewhat skewed by wanna-be's and hacks.

If you ever want to be in the real Military you better learn damn fast that it is run by Senior NCO's.         

I read you post on possibly going to the Yard and wish you the best. However, keep an attitude like that and you won't make it through Plebe Summer or a Fleet Returnee to the Yard will set you straight in the Bo'suns locker.

No, I am responding to a bitter statement that Enlisted is the ONLY way to go because officers suck. (Not his exact words, but the sentiment emparted). I did NOT speak ill of all NCOs, nor of the concept of the NCO, whereas Junky denounced ALL officers. (Not in the joking manner lowzx14 did, but seriously). Bosco and I are both interested in aviation. So, why in God's name would I ever go in enlisted (as per his advice)?!? Believe me, I know senior NCOs are the back-bone of the military, and by christ I respect them. I am saying to Junky, that he cannot denounce the officer corps entirely. So lets please look at the entire conversation instead of jumping into the middle, and running headlong into the wrong conclusion.

Not true, least unless you're talking about just the United States.

I had a patient that flew for Portugal as a Sgt both during and after WWII and got to fly many of the warbirds that got interned there. His pictures were incredible too...

I was talking about the U.S. I didn't know other countries put NCOs in cockpits. That's good to know!

We trained NCOs to fly as well, many guys were only promoted after they got their wings during WWII.

Germany had NCOs flying in combat until the end of the war as well.

We also demoted them at the end of the war. Everyone in my Grandfather's class was given the option at the end of the war to discharge or get dropped back down to Buck Private. (According to him).

I will jump in here on the discussion about upper level NCO's.  My chief saved my butt, as well as our LT and others on many an occasion, especially "politically".  The best advice I could give a new officer or recruit is listen to, and take care of your chief/gunny
I was lucky, my chief had enlisted in the Army Air Corps right after WWII, and was still very much "old school" in handling things.  A lot of the trouble I got myself into was handled "off the books"  Any of those types still around?  I don't want to think about how many years it's been since I was in.
