Battle of France

BATTLE OF FRANCE

Suddenly, on May 10, 1940, the Phony War
ends.  The British and French, convinced
that they have correctly anticipated a
second version of the WWI Schlieffen Plan,
await a German onslaught through Belgium.
Instead the radical new Panzer armies,
led by young, aggressive German generals,
strike unexpectedly through the Ardennes
forests and into the rear of the Allied
armies advancing confidently into Belgium.
Only light and disorganized ground units
are available to oppose them.  Grasping the
only tools at hand, the Allied generals throw
all their aviation units into the area in a
desperate attempt to buy time for their
armies to regroup.

AXIS (Knights)

NOTES

The current lack of available French aircraft
limits the Allied plane set to the RAF.  The
Boston III may be viewed as representing some
of the few but fine French bombers.  No Spitfires
were actually employed in the Battle of France
until the Dunkirk evacuation.  We have no 1940
armored vehicles; we have substituted M8s, which
are as close as we can get.

As always, thanks to the map makers for this
wonderful Ardennes08 terrain, which shows off
the planes of the era.

Fog is set at 12.5 miles.
Traditional AvA bombsight (must be calibrated).
Radar settings as follows:
   Tower 079,200 (feet)
   Sector 105,600
Fuel is 1.0 burn rate.
Ack is .25 (that is, considerably less effective than MA)
Friendly mid-airs are off.
Killshooter is on.
Strat is disabled.
Ten troops required for base capture (map room setting
 is .0015)
There is no radio channel one.  By convention,
people use channel 200 for cross-country
 communications.

AND PLEASE REMEMBER:  Civil behavior is valued,
and required, in this arena.

Flew it tonight.

Tons of fun!

The emil matches up okay with the spitfire MK1, and is able to mix it up with the hurricane if flown right too.

Didn't see alot of 110 action other than me, and I got my butt handed to me there. Them little .303's hurt!

Word of warning though...watch out for the boston. It is deceptively agile (hehe).

cheers,

OK?  OK?  The Emil v. Spit I is probably the best AvA plane match of them all (Corsair v. Frank comes next, IMHO).  Even though it's limited, the 1940 plane set is my very favorite.

Good fights in there this evening, welcome to the new as well as the old folks.

Yup I think the Emil and Spit 1 are dang near evenly matched. The Spit 1 rolls a little better but it tends to go into a weird little stall when you go into a rolling scissor to the left. I had a blast last night. I too upped a 110C...was amazed to see it would turn with some of the spit drivers in there

Emil can roll very quickly with engine torque and a bit of rudder.  The Spit 1 vs Emil is my favorite match.  I have a film of Oldman and I going round and round for about 15 minutes lol

Both have their pluses and minuses, but they match up so close...  I can't think of another match later in the war that is nearly as close.

:aok  Had tons of fun earlier today when my connection would behave.  The matchups are awesome.  :salute  My only sad point, didn't the Brits have anything larger than spitballs to lob in early war.

If you're in a SpitI Chilli, set the convergence on all your guns to 200yds, then get in close and blast away.

Good advice.  I set the 8-gun British fighter convergence to 175 yards.  If you shoot from that range, they really chop up the enemy plane.

Thanks for the advice Oldman and Jenks.  :salute  I have my convergence set at 200.  I have tried 175, and it is maybe just an issue with my connection.  This is an old problem for me, and since I don't have anyone else's data to compare with mine, I have to continue my whine.  I don't know why, but distance between 400 and 200 last night it took 1000 rounds to effectively rip a wing off an opponents 110.  And I mean, 1000 rounds on target!  The guy was newb and was in rear gun so was sitting duck.  So, I guess 1000 rounds of .303s equals one 20mm tater.

Like I say, I have no way of comparing how the game registers damage from your connection or computer, but this cannot reasonably represent real world damage on my computer.  Show me all the charts you want, I know what an ought three does in damage.  The same for .50 cals, the damage done from either of these weapons on my computer has been castrated.  Just watch any WW2 film footage, and you see split second bursts ripping off wings, flaming vulnerable planes and most definitely doing more damage.

I do love the matchup.  :aok  I just wish they would get the damage right.
