Comcast doubles its Internet speeds; Cable provider's 'wideband' allows more data to flow

Comcast doubled the Internet speeds to many of its customers at no additional cost this week. The company is rolling out its new 'wideband' technology, which increases speeds by allowing more information to pass through its network. That will enable customers to use more data-heavy programs like video and games, said Jeff Alexander, Comcast spokesman.
Customers who subscribe to the Performance tier of service will continue to pay $42.95 a month if they subscribe to video or phone service, or $59.95 if they don't.
But now they'll get 12 Mbps of download speed and 2 Mbps of upload speed. That's up from 6 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload. They may need to reboot their modems to get the higher speeds, Alexander said. 
"In general, we're finding that more speed is very important to customers, particularly as they watch more video on sites like YouTube or Fancast.com," Alexander said. "Our objective was to deliver more options and flexibility."
Subscribers to the slower economy and Performance Lite categories, as well as the faster Blast category, will see no change in speeds, he said. 
Comcast also unveiled several new offerings, including speeds of up to 22/5 Mbps and 50/10 Mbps, and packages for businesses.
Sharon Shaffer, spokeswoman for Verizon, said her company increased Internet speeds at no cost last summer to some FiOS customers, including ones in Delaware, that didn't already have the highest speeds.
Other, older customers had to pay $3 to $5 more a month to receive the higher speeds, she said. Her company's maximum speed is now 50/20.
"Verizon already has a history of continuously raising Internet speeds, and with an all-fiber network, we can continue to do so. Our Internet speeds today beat Comcast, particularly upstream. Comcast is playing catch-up," Shaffer said.
