It's "game time".  Sun comes up around 6ish AM, Starts to get dusky about 6PM.  I suppose if it got dark it would show how long you had to go do something else while you waited for the sun to come back up.

Back in the the day when we had night, you couldn't post missions past 18:00 if I remember correctly.
