Geforce 6800 Ultra...How do you think it'll do?
« on: March 07, 2009, 08:37:55 PM »
I recently obtained a Geforce 6800 Ultra 512 PCI/E for around $20.00..
How do you guys think it'll do on AH?  I know it's yesterday's news compared to
what's out today..  But looks like it's still a pretty viable card..  Anyone ever
have one of these?  It'll be running with an Intel E4500 and 2 gigs if Crucial Ballistix PC6400 on Windows XP w/SP3. (this will be my kid's PC)
Should be able to run Aces High at 1280x1024 with everything turned up pretty much balls out, yeah?
I know it's over kill for a kid's PC, but it'll be a back-up for me as well..  Well, more like my 3rd back up..lol

i just upgraded to a 9600 GSO for 63.00 from newegg which 4 x faster then the 6600
they had some 9600 GSO's  from EVGA for 50.00

I had an AGP 6800GT for a long time running AH and it worked fine.  I only upgraded the video card when I replaced the motherboard and of course the new one doesn't have an AGP slot.  If I was still using an AGP mobo the 6800GT would still be the card I would be using.  If it works ok (ie. it's not defective), you'll get your money's worth for sure.

Used to run this game off a 5500 and 1GB of RAM, so my bet is it should easily be competitive for a game like AH.

yeah, I kinda of figured as much...  Seeing that it's PCI/E and the being the Ultra edition, I've got high hopes..  Again, this is actually for my son's PC..  I skipped a generation of
hardware when I built this PC I use currently (Went from Pentium 4 to C2D)..  I checked out some stats on both processor and card and it should run it balls out..
Anyhow, thanks for the info.. :salute

PCI/e will run circles around AGP all day

Actually, it doesn't.  About a dozen hardware review sites matched "identical" AGP and PCI/e cards against each other and AGP was actually faster in many cases.  PCI/e looks faster because the vid card manufacturers deliberately crippled their AGP versions by reducing clock speed or eliminating key features, and eventually simply quit releasing AGP versions of their cards.

The PCI/e bus has a few things going for it.  Although it is in fact a faster bus, the bus speed still did not materially affect the overall speed of the card (including image quality and framerates) through the nvidia geforce 7xxx series cards.  On the other hand, pci/e is more flexible and expandable, and with the last several generations of motherboard chipsets, it is cheaper to implement.

I guess if you're a motherboard designer or a marketing droid, pci/e really is better than AGP, but if all you have is a single graphics card then an AGP version would be essentially identical in performance to an pci/e version.  You can say the improved bus speed would make the difference, but the fact is that it doesn't make a darn bit of difference.  The AGP bus has some efficiencies that the pci/e bus does not, and the really important factor is how fast and efficient the memory located on the video card is, not the bus speed.

I've seen the numbers, and they were duplicated by a number of independent web reviewers.

You should be fine with that card, as long as it works.

eagl is quite right.  For the most part, there are no real world performance differences between PCI-E and AGP.  PCI-X is significantly faster than PCI-E, but very expensive to implement.  It is not about better performance.  It is about cost.

PCI-E is cheaper to implement than AGP or PCI, like SATA being cheaper to implement than IDE, like USB is cheaper to implement.  See the pattern?

I used this card every day for 4-5 years worked great!  Aces looked great on it.  It finally died about a month ago in an oddball way.  I was looking out my periscope at a Japanese destroyer I was planing on sinking when suddenly the phone rings and a series of red lines went all over the screen.  PC now boots to a blank screen.  If i go into safe mode I can see the red lines again.  So I guess the card fried when the phone rang.  It might be just a coincidence , because the phone that serves the PC is a separate line that comes straight from the pole.  So there is no "cross talk" in my house.  The only possible source of crosstalk maybe in the box at the pole ...who knows.   Anyway you will enjoy this card, mine served me faithfully for thousands of hours.

No sir.  I was the only one home.  Plus the weather was calm.  It may just be coincedence, but the red lines DID appear at the exact moment the phone rang.  The DSL line I run on is straight from the pole to a box then to the PC
