ATI 4850 with slow FPS.

I recently went from running a 7600GT Nvidia card to the new Radeon 4850.  In all my other games the increase in performance is massive, usually double average framerate, triple max  frame rate, and In most games I've  gone from using moderate settings to full out ones in Battlefield 2, COD4, WoW, Crysis,etc at 1680x1050 resolution.

In Aces high however, in the Offline area and utilizing the same aircraft, I recieve about 1/2 the average  FPS with the new ATI card.   Does Aces High haveATI Issues? is there a setting I need to change?  I utilized the 7600 in "performance" mode and turned off every setting except 4x AA to smooth the jaggies.  The ATI card I can even do everything turned to performance or off and it is still slower in AH.

Both cards were installed with an AMD 4000+ 64 single core, 2 gbs ram, DFI Lanparty NF2-UT-Ultra motherboard.  Installed textres are always 1024, AH internal program options maxxed.

Partially related, I  noticed that if I alt tab out of AHII and back in with the ATI card, I lose the anti aliasing at 4x until I exit and restart AHII.  Nvidia could alt tab in and out with impunity.

To clarify further.  I use the 60fps lock setting for both cards.  The Nvidia card holds 45-55 fps and the ATI card spends a lot of time in the 25ish range

Download the ATI Tray Tools and uninstall the ATI Catalyst Control Center.

Do not limit the frame rate using the option in the game's "Video Settings" unless you are experiencing vide tearing.

Run the game with "Vertical Sync" forced on in the video card.

And like Masherbrum stated, get rid of the Catalyst Control Center and use Ray Adams ATI Tray Tools instead.

No, Aces High does not have issues with ATI cards.  I have an ATI 4850 and 4870 at home, and use a 1600 at work.  The biggest problem comes from switching between ATI and NVidia and not properly removing all remants of the other driver.  It is imperative a driver cleaner be used to make sure all registry settings have been purged when you switch from one manufacturer to another.

You could also be running into CPU related performance caps.  Aces High II is more CPU dependent than video card dependent as modeling flight does take more CPU power than any FPS game would.  On my 4850, at home, with vertical sync disabled, offline, 1280x1024 resolution, 4XAA, 0xAF, high res textures installed, setting in the cockpit of a B24 on the NE runway of ndisles, mine is getting between 145 and 154FPS.

If you run games that are very video card dependent, they will run better with the 4850 versus the 7600GT, but games which are CPU dependent will not see as much of an advantage.

My home computer is an Intel Core2 E8400@3.71Ghz.

You might ask in the "Hardware and Software" forums, as I have never used one.  Whenever I have switched between ATI and Nvidia, I bite the bullet and re-install the OS.

My good friend and tech support guru suggested Driver Cleaner Pro.  Its freeware, and can be found with a google search.   He's never used it to switch between brands of video cards, but uses it constantly to update his video drivers, and has had no issues with conflicts.   (I on the other hand, figure if it isn't broke, don't fix it category).

i had the same issue my 9600 GSO is 4X faster then my old 6600 but the frame rates just dropped from 60+ constant  on my 6600 to 10-12 and it spikes back up to 60+

You need to ditch the Catalyst Control Panel and install Ray Adams "ATI Tray Tools".  You can get it at http://www.guru3d.com

how did you bump your cpu up to 3.71?
I have a sapphire 4850 and the E8400 running stock speeds on a gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P board now. What do you use for cooling?

I run the memory FSB at 533Mhz, with a 1:1 ratio to the CPU and lock the I/O bus at 400Mhz.  Then set the CPU multipler to 7.  You need RAM that can run at 533Mhz though.

I used the Thermaltake Ultra 120 for the HSF.  Keeps the CPU at, or below, 40C when under load.  25C when idle.

Just keep in mind, overclocking like this can cause damage if you are not careful.  If you decide to take on this type of modification, then be prepared for the worst, which is to say, a CPU and motherboard being burned out.

840mhz gpu clock
485mhz memory clock
 i used the ati overdrive to set mine up
my computer is an
x-4,9550 amd phenom quad core
5120 mb system memory
750 gb hard drive
 my frame rates run about 50 to 60 most of the time,
i would like higher frame rates say 75 to 85,
 but i am not all that computer savy
i am probably lucky i have not crashed this one yet!

the 9550 is only a 2.2ghz per core so theres plenty of room to upgrade your CPU spee. which would help improve your frames a little

the new AM3 chips X4 810 are 2.6
                          X3 720 is 2.8ghz and BE (unlocked multiplier)
                          X3 710 is 2.6

theses are much better then the agena cored phenom's and come with more cache
