Windows 2000 professional

I'm thinking of building a new PC specifically for aces high, and reinstalling my old windows 2000 pro OS on it.
I know its old but I never had any problems running aces high on it or doing anything else on it, I would like to hear a few opinions on this from pc builders as it seems to be the tread that as I buy faster more powerful machines with more processing power and memory the slower everything goes, I can only put this down to the OS or newer programs demanding more memory to operate. So is Windows 2000 pro the best Microsoft OS made? Or have I just been extremely unlucky since it?

I doubt you'd get many Windows Updates for it.  That would probably be the worst thing, if they've cut Updates for it.

Drivers still shouldn't be an issue.

Except maybe the motherboard drivers and any newer graphic cards, sound cards, etc.  No one's supporting that OS anymore.  I've got the same problems with my old Win98 systems.

I'd advise upgrading your OS to at least XP home (Pro if you've got the $) or waiting for Win7.

The problem with that is with every release windows seems to be getting worse?? When I switched to XP Pro from 2000 Pro I was like god this stinks lots of hanging programs and the thing just generally annoying me, then I went and got a vaio with vista on it and good god that really stinks so will windows 7 be any different? All I want from an OS is for it to do whats its supposed to do in a reasonable time.

Regarding newer graphics cards and drivers I could see were that might be a problem maybe hunt down some older high end graphics cards off ebay or something that would be supported?

Fact is I used to be able to run Aces High with photoshop dreamweaver and numerous appliances running in the background with windows 2000 and always had a smooth game. With XP now I get stutters when windows is performing a task in the background or when I get to trees in a low fight. Vista just makes aces high completely unplayable warping etc.

One thing you must do with the newer operating systems is trim them down. Use a program like AlacrityPC to set them up for gaming sessions. The main reason for OSes to slow down as you mention is that with every release, MS attempts to make them more unbreakable and accessible for Ma & Pa. So, you either keep all of the safety services and put up with extreme CPU overhead, or you learn how to keep your computer secure and usable and remove the unneeded processes sitting in the background, the worst being updaters such as jusched.exe and qttask.exe.

Do a little research on PC optimization and you can get an XP machine running as well as (or better) than a 2000 machine in a couple hours at most. I'm really not sure if there's too much that can be done for Vista...

The Ma and Pa thing is another thing I noticed   XP was well mildly patronising and and Vista just assumed you came up the river in a bubble   with the result that it actually took long time windows users a while to 're learn' how do to a lot of things especially search I beleive from what I hear they are doing away with this in the next windows release. As for optimising XP I've already been down that route and it did make it run markedly better but I don't know if it would top 2000. Now I thought I was getting all rose tinted glasses about how good it actually was but a quick hunt around google and I found a lot of people share the same opinion.

problem is support for 2000 now..

between XP and Vista i would pick XP anytime.

when windows 7 comes out have to see how things go .. looks alot better then vista does as a option.

The problem I had with Windows 2000 was driver support for a video card. I tried using that os first in one of my builds.

This is like begging for problems, I ran win2k for the longest time, swore I would never upgrade to XP... then I couldn't run a newer game on 2k so I updated by setting up a dual boot 2K/XP.  It wasn't long after I setup another dual boot XP/XP and haven't looked back.  One side has my apps the other side is just for the games, its been flawless.

Secret to XP is getting a good clean install, then turning off a lot of garbage.
Take the time to install only what you need, clean up the start menu.
Get the processes down in the 18 - 22 range. Turn off automatic updates.
In fact I don't let ANY software on my machines autoupdate.

Example, don't install the full ATI/Nvidia desktop utilities for your video card. Just the drivers.
Do that with everything. For flying AH you don't need a full AV suite, just Threatfire.


Vista is 16x worse
Windows 7 is vista repackaged with no real help on the BS.

I was a Win98SE fan for a long time, but XP isn't so bad if you keep it caged.
Keep it clean, and make sure it understands who the boss is. And the answer isn't Bill Gates
