Overrated/Underrated planes in AH

If I understand correctly the new perk system will reward kills in rarely flown planes more highly than kills in popular planes.  So for accumulating perk points it will do us all good to fly less popular planes.  IMHO there are some popular planes which aren't so good for getting lots of kills, and some unpopular ones which are being overlooked:

Overrated:

109G-10:   Pretty popular, and a good pilot can do well in it if he is patient.  But it is restricted in ammo and range and has poor high speed handling.  It's hard to survive a multi-kill mission in a furball arena so racking up perk points would be tough in this bird.

Yak-9:  Some people swear by it but it is mostly a pest.  Even more limited in ammo and firepower than the 109G-10, and it's not so good up high.  Not a good plane for would-be Me-262 drivers.

Underrated:

La-5:  Butt-kicking little low-alt fighter, you never see them around so kills in this will be worth good perk points.  A great little furballer.

F4U-1D:  Nobody flies it because its bastard-son-of-a-thousand-maniacs brother the Chog has 2-3 times the firepower.  But it is a good plane in the right hands and could be used to rack up perk points.

FW-190A5:  Nicest handling plane in the game, good firepower, decent ammo load.  Pretty rare in the MA, so a good potential perk point scorer.  I don't know why it isn't more popular.

FW-190A8:  Tough to fly in a furball arena full of Niki's and Spits, but a good BnZ pilot can get a lot of hi-perk kills in it because only the most psychotic LW drivers fly it.

P-51. Despite this being my favorite plane, I rank the 51 as an overrated plane simply because of its guns.  As anyone has found who has tried to kill with 6 50s, you better be a damn good shot or hope for a sustained tracking shot of 2-3 seconds.  Its not like the snapshot wunderkill of the cannon armed planes.

Tiffy.  Despite what others have said, I just dont see what this plane has got.  Sure its got 4 Hispano but if your enemy denies you the HO, you better hope you start with a huge E advantage.  And the thing burns E faST!

Underrated:

La5.  If you are an E fighter, grab the La5.  Thing flys pretty well with 2 ShVAK cannon to boot.  Think of a Mustang on Steroids...at least under 15K.

A65M.  That friggin turn rate is un-effing-believeable.  A 20mm cannon helps out with firepower as well.  I've seen good pilots in zekes enter fites that most would not dare to enter and succeed.

190A5.  As RA said, its more maneuvrable than many think.  Although not very fast it has pretty good turn performance and prolly compares favorably to a Yak.  Speed however is only marginally better than a spits it seems.  You will get run down by Nikis on the deck.

190A5 uses to be dead meat against a Yak9. The yak turns better, accelerates much better, is faster, and has quite good rolling (not 190's rolrate,but still a decent one).

I know it well. I am dedicated A5 pilot  

Overrated:

109G10: its a little squeak ,cant turn ,cant roll, cant dive, cant spray,all it can do is run,climb and accelerate. Not much for a fighting machine.

109G2: I hear everyone saying its a great plane. Its not that bad, but not a record breaker either.

Ostie: I think I have been killed by 2 of these since the second day of 1.04. I agree,tho, that the effect on structures is too good. That will be fixed in 1.05   (When I was killed 4 times in a row  , as an AAA  weapon is no big problem, just stay away from it).

Underrated:

La5 and Yak9: like turning 109Gs. Highly dangerous,both of them.

Typhoon: the lack of torque makes this thing be a monster.


P38L: a nice plane in all regards. Not a good turner, but is good or average in almost everything else. And has awesome firepower.

I think people don't realize how good the C.205 is.  Its the same DB-605 engine from the 109-G10, and has two cannons instead of one.

My brother and I flew them for awhile.  We did great in them, even liked them more than the 109s.

Of course we've moved onto Typhoons now.

dont underestimate 190a8 with a light loadout

c205 is definately underated
109G2 is a beast for base defence.Excellent wep
ju88 is underated too   ive generally had positive kill/death ratio in it and with its diverse loadout you can kill airfield acks, fuel,a hanger and dive bomb any spare vehicles with your last 500kg

No. It has the same engine as the 109G6.

I agree,tho, that it is an underrated plane...kind of a faster but worse turning Spit IX.

I'd fly it more, but I hate the cockpit, makes me feel like in a jail. Can't see in that thing  .

Well it appears that the secret is slipping out on the LA5   .

It's been my main ride for the last 2 tours ever since AKNimitz turned me on to it. Climbs well, fast enough to be dangerous, and turns well down low if all else fails. Not to mention you still have good control at 500 IAS in a full power dive!

On a good day even a mediocre pilot like me can land 3 & 4 kill sorties with fuel & ammo left.

I also like the 205 but since icons disappear behind cockpit struts it's tougher to maintain SA in IMO. Doesn't seem to be quite as "Smooth" or intuitive as the La5 either.

Both should be good rides for picking up points.

Underrated:  The 109F4. This plane can be a surprise to an opponent. It is pleasant to fly and can get you out of a jam.  I don't fly it much anymore.  Hmmmmmm!  Maybe I'll go back to it for awhile!  I also agree the 205 is underrated, this is also a nice machine.

Do not think any one plane is overrated.  But I do have to say that the P-51 is one sweet machine.  If you have paitence, and do not rush into a furball, get your speed, then attack, it can kill.  I have done well (well for me) in it.  For those who have taken time out to learn it, no wonder they are true killers.  A well handled P-51 is the most dangerous plane in the sky. It can engage at will, it can flee at will. The pilot can pick his fight, which is an advantage in any arena.

Underrated,
Definately the LA-5. I still die a lot but it usually takes a bit longer Just wish HTC would give it a cosmetic make over, especially that cockpit..... (Involuntary shudder).

M3, Not joking that 50 cal is awesome once took a B17 that was taking off down with it   .

Overrated,
Nikki & Chog, I don't find these easier to get kills in at all (Runs berhind flame proof bunker, gets a beer and waits).

Actually the old art is working to my advantage. Flying the lanc my FPS is down around 12- 14, but in the LA5 at 10k it runs around 30. Big difference for slower machines like mine!

Oh no, I do realize it. When you are used to low cockpit visibility, huge head movements, some FM instability ... she is deadly from 0 up to 18K  

I like the La-5FN as well, that little fast grey bastard ...

Hmmm I don't think p51 or G10 can be considered overrated.  2 planes that can engage or disengage at will.  When flown properly.

Overrated
Chog, sure it can engage, proximity fuzed 20mm's that can shoot to 1.5k, however once its engaged it has to stay to te end.  Can't climb well, can't turn well, not extremely fast.

N1K, sure if you play its game you gonna die, pilots being equal.  Stay fast use the vertical and he's yours.
 
Underrated

205! sweet aircraft IMO, with perhaps the exception of the visibility the cockpit affords.  Good ammo load, decent speed, better handling than the later 109's.

SpitV... watched Busc fly into a swarm of bish the other night, thought for sure his lifespan was gonna be short...  WRONG.. he walked away with at least 6 scalps I think.

La5 for reasons stated by previous posters.
