The la5 is a fun plane to fly when there is a low furball nearby. The thing keeps its speed very well and handles excellently at high speeds. It's main vices are that the gunsight makes deflection shooting much more difficult than other planes. The cannons also have more dispersion than most other planes IMO. Fortunately there is plenty of ammo and the cannons do plenty of damage when you do land hits.
The la5 has great acceleration and climb down low. You can usually climb away and then dive back down on any plane foolish enough to try to climb with you. (Short of the 109g10, but you can out turn and out roll that thing easy.) Down low I've even managed to catch p51s and f4us attempting to disengage.
I also like flying the p47d25, but I couldn't tell you one major advantage it has over other planes down low. About all it can do is barely outrun the n1k. It's still a blast to fly though.
