TilDeath PC Review
« on: March 12, 2009, 03:19:46 PM »
My computer had been on its death bed for some time, and it became obvious that I would need to either replace it soon, or get used to an abacus.  I knew that I didn’t want to pay some company like Dell or Alienware loads of extra money to build a machine that I could build myself for cheaper, but I also knew that I wasn’t too interested in investing the time and effort to build one of my own.  Luckily, I managed to find a happy compromise: I had TilDeath build a machine for me.

I didn’t know TilDeath from the game, and the thought of handing over a decent amount of money to someone I’d only heard of through a bulletin board would normally give me pause (think “Voss”).  My concerns were erased when I found that two people I know and highly respect, Delirium and Hlbly, had both purchased machines from him and were totally satisfied.  Their testimony convinced me to give TilDeath a call.

I asked Hlbly for TilDeath’s number, and gave him a call that night.  I told him how much I was looking to spend, what I was looking to do with the machine, and we worked out a deal.

He answered all my questions, and even spent a good amount of time answering non-related technical questions for an issue I was having.  I felt like I was having a friend build it and not an agent.

He asked me not to disclose the price, because the cost of parts can fluctuate several times per week, but I will say I found it completely reasonable.  It was basically cost of parts + shipping + an extremely reasonable labor fee.  The small amount of money I paid him in labor was WELL worth the amount of time, studying, aggravation, effort, probable difficulty, and possible disaster that would have accompanied any attempt by me to build it myself.  When you factor all that in, I essentially got a do-it-yourself price, which as is obvious, saves a ton of money.

After I had ordered the machine, I read TilDeath’s post about his UPS horror story, and had some worries of my own.  But when my machine arrived, I found to my pleasure that it was packed in an idiot-proof fashion – box inside of box and highly padded.

TilDeath then walked me through turning the machine on, explained everything he had done, showed me where to find what I needed and advised how to go about doing things in the future.  He had already installed Aces High, but had me log in so he could walk me through what settings to check.  Try getting that with Dell ;)

I’ve spent the past week or so putting this machine through its paces and can say I’m extremely pleased.  It plays Aces High flawlessly at the highest detail settings, which is great.  I’d been playing with visual range set at about 0.5 miles and still getting a very poor frame rate anywhere besides a 1v1 in the DA.  Now, I’m playing with the range set at 3.0 and no problems with tracers flying all around and a bunch of planes in a furball.  Likewise, I can also play the Total War series at a high graphics level.  I was never able to experience “huge” or “ultra” unit settings before without severe performance problems.  Now I can, and yes, it makes a difference :)

All in all, and most importantly, I feel as though I got great value for my money.  I got a better product and better service for much less money than I would have paid a major company.  In any economy, that sort of result is appreciated, but in today’s, it’s vital.

If you are considering getting a new computer I highly advise you to at least drop TilDeath a PM.  He’ll send you his number, and after a conversation and a bit of research I’m confident you’ll decide to buy through him, and be very happy with your decision to do so.

Thanks again, TilDeath,

JP

The personal touch is sorely lacking in this modern day. I am happy to read that your dealings with a small independant IT company has resulted in joy and satisfaction way beyond that which can be achieved by a multinational.

Long live the little guy.

Yeah, if I ever had the money to buy a new computer all at once, instead of the way I'm having to build mine which is piece by piece, I would have definitely had TilDeath build my machine, every post I've ever read on here about systems he's built have all been glowing.  The guy really seems to know how to put together a computer at any price and give you the most performance for your money.  So like I said, if I had the money to put one together all at once, TilDeath would have definitely built mine.

Thank you all for the nice comments.  Like stated above about the ecomomy I feel as a person and a company you have to stand out from the rest in some fashion and mine happens to be access.  Anyone who has bought a system from me knows I am accessable and know the intimate details of their machine, I am not reading from a screen and troubleshooting.  We keep detailed data sheets on all builds which have the drivers installed, the overclock settings in the BIOS with the voltages etc etc.  Most importantly we use only quality parts tested and proven to work in the configurations we ship, no guess work.

Again thanks to all who have purchased or inquired about systems from us.

I've built a bunch of em and I'd call TD and chat before I built the next one. Never hurts to explore the possibilities...

TilDeath built the unit for me that was put through the death watch by *PS, even through all his frustration he handled himself as a astute businessman.  He handled the rebuild and talked me through the initial power up and followed up with several calls.  I would hesitate to use him again.  A class act sir <S> TilDeath. :salute

I am also the pround owner of a TilDeath built machine.  Talk about value for the buck - He built mine, installed AH and the hi-res pack, had it completely set up and ready to go, and for over a hundred dollars less than the parts alone would have cost me at New Egg!  (I'm sure on this, my son and I looked up the prices on the parts).
I started out the same as Vudak - needed a new machine, but really didn't know where to turn.  I posted some ideas on these boards about possible off the shelf purchases that would give me improved performance.  Several people were nice enough to recommend some possibilities in that area, but many others also suggested that I contact TilDeath.  At first I was  leary about spending that much money with someone that I didn't know, but once I called him I found out that Rich is extremely easy to talk to, as well as being very knowledgeable about the subjects.  I would definitely recommend him to anybody looking for a new machine - especially if you're like me and have no idea about how to go about building one yourself.

Think of it like this:  Alienware performance at Wal-Mart Prices! :aok

Tildeath's builds are great!

It looks like I may be purchasing another 1 or 2 machines from him for in laws.

(Tildeath, you CAN put sublimnal code that says 'Be nice to your son/brother in law' whenever they stare at the screen? Right?)

I posted some info about a new PC I was planning to build for myself recently. Tildeath jumped in and contributed SOLID advice, even knowing I was working with a NewEgg gift certificate my wife bought me for Christmas. (Bless her  :rock ) He knew I was going to buy components from Newegg, but still took the time to assist.
That made it very easy for me to steer a Squaddie to Tildeath when he needed a new gamimg machine.
I have founds Tildeaths knowledge and experience to be above reproach, and would highly recommend his services to anyone wanting a top notch gaming machine.
