Another tank idea
« on: June 13, 2000, 07:34:00 AM »
I was trying to find a tank that had a as capable or better then the Pz-IVH's 75mm that also a much better crusing speed.

At first looking at speed, the Russian Bt-7a, an early war tank looked good till going over it's 76mm gun...turns out it's a close support gun with a pitiful 363 m/s muzzle velocity for a 6.27kg projectile.

I think Pyro has mentioned something about it already but the best bet is the M-18 Hellcat TD. It's speed tops out around 50mph, and it's got a slightly better gun, a 76mm that fires 7kg projectile at 792 m/s vs the PzIVH's 75mm, 6.8kg projectile at 790 m/s.

The trade off for the speed is small ammo load and very light armor...common with TD's.
It does however carry some HE shells, normally 10 with 35 AP shells.

Be kind of interesting to see...it's fast but it'd be only slightly harder to kill then the M-16, and having an open top doesn't help much. But it's speed would make it an interesting strike vehicle, and with an M3 APC coming, the medium PzIV, the AA M-16, and plans for the M7, the only thing lacking is a good TD vehicle

I think the M18 had only 13mm of armor.  I have seen one in real life, it is very tall, making for a big siloutte.  Still, it would be neat to have in here since its so fast.

The Cromwell had an inferior gun, 75mm 6.55kg shot at 618m/s, but superior armour, (up to 76mm) and a top speed of 40mph.

Yes it is rather thin skinned, the price you pay for the fastest tracked vehicle of WWII

Armor Stats, in mm:

FrontArmor = 14.0
SideArmor = 14.0
RearArmor = 13.0
FrontTurret = 25.0
SideTurret = 14.0
RearTurret = 13.0
TopArmor = 5.0

It is a very small frame for a very small tank, only 2.4m high. An M-36 Jackson with the 90mm, or an M-10 Wolverine (With the same 76mm as the M-18) are also good choice TD's ...But if HTC wants to go into the ughknown they can model a T-26 Pershing

Most of the faster British Cruiser tanks are from early on in the war, I was kinda gearing for late war that could handle the PzIVH. IMO Churchills were some of the best allied tanks made, but being infantry support they went all but a whoppinh 8mph
A VC Firefly Sherman would be good one, as would a Centurion. Well anything that mounts the 17 Pounder.
