Mosquito FB.IV

Hi all

Just been reading about the Mossie FB.IV

Can anyone confirm that the:-

4 x 20mm Hispano's had 300 rounds each.

4 x .303 MGs had 2,000 rounds each.

It seems awfully high, not that I would complain!

Hi Nexx,
I've gotta agree with you except 1 thing. Do you mean the FB VI (Not FB IV). My dad has an old print of an FB VI which states..

4 X 20 Hispano in nose 300 rpg
4 X .303 in nose 2,000 rpg

4 X 500LB bombs internal
2 X 500LB bombs on Wing points

I thought it sounded like a lot but as he said there is a lot more room in a Mossie fuselage than a Spitfire wing.

Sounds pretty awesome for the odd V field take out.

Yep Snafu, it was indeed the VI, got my numerals mixed up!

It just seemed to me to be a phenomenal amount of ammo!  Use the .303s to target the plane then open up with the 20mm's!

Oh, instead of the wing mounted bombs it could carry rockets - same spec as the Tiffy's.

Hmm...

In fact, the FB Mk VI's were use quite a bit in the anti-maritime role and would site their rockets with the guns. They would set convergence such that when they were a certain distance from the ship (Don't remember the exact number) they were attacking, they would shoot at it so they could see the shells hit just below the waterline. Then they would know `when' to fire the rockets for the optimal kill shot.

Try that in AH - it doesn't work, the rockets drop out of sight after about 100 yards maybe...
